On our Uyghur Collective Instagram page, we share images that speak to the Uyghur culture, daily life, politics and history. We aim to be educational but also communal. We want to bring Uyghurs in the diaspora together by showcasing shared experiences.
In that sense, art has always been an important part of the platform, so this contest began naturally in 2019 to provide a platform, audience, and professional feedback for budding artists. We focus on themes that relate to the Uyghur experience.
The contest is run on a totally voluntary basis and is an endeavour of love. Our judge and commentator, @orda.artmind, shares this passion and has volunteered his services each year.
But we wanted to give back to our community and support our artists' talents and passions. We wanted to create a professional, competitive space where our artists can be recognised and praised through tangible means.
For our first year, we had an out-of-pocket prize pool of $100 which went to the first place winner. In our second year, our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners received $150, $100, and $50 respectively, thanks to support from the community.
This year we want to be more ambitious! Can we reach our goal?
Our art contests have showcased the works of really talented people who have moved on to work with brands to create beautiful products, or started selling their art online. You can read more about our previous contests on our website.
