We do not buy Health Information from data brokers or collect it from social networks.
This Section covers personal information other than Health Information. Health Information is used only as described in Section 4.5.
3.1 Purposes. We use personal information to:
3.2 Aggregated and de-identified data. We may create aggregated or de-identified data that can no longer reasonably identify you, and use it for research, reporting and improving the Services. We will not attempt to re-identify it. De-identified data derived from Health Information will meet a recognized de-identification standard, will not be shared with advertisers, and will be disclosed only to recipients who agree in writing not to re-identify it.
3.3 Legal bases (EEA and UK users). Where the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation applies, we rely on:
| Legal basis | Examples |
|---|---|
| Performance of a contract | Running your account, processing donations and payouts |
| Legitimate interests | Fraud prevention, security, service improvement, limited direct marketing to existing users |
| Legal obligation | Tax records, sanctions screening, responding to lawful requests |
| Consent | Marketing where required, non-essential cookies, Health Information (Section 4.13) |
Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting earlier processing.
4.1 What we mean by health information. "Health Information" means any information that identifies, or could reasonably be linked to, a person's past, present or future physical or mental health. It includes diagnoses, conditions, symptoms, injuries, disabilities, treatments, medications, procedures, test results, pregnancy and reproductive health, medical bills and cost estimates, insurance details, hospital or provider names, and photos or videos showing a medical condition or care setting. It also includes information we derive or infer about a person's health from other data or sources.
4.2 How we collect it. We collect Health Information only when it is provided to us or is needed to run the Services, including when:
With the Campaign Organizer's consent, we may contact a care provider named in a medical Campaign solely to confirm treatment costs or payment details. We do not ask Donors for Health Information, and we do not infer health conditions from donation history, browsing activity on medical Campaigns, or device data.
4.3 Information about Beneficiaries. Before submitting a Beneficiary's Health Information, the Campaign Organizer must have that person's express consent or legal authority to act for them, such as being a parent, legal guardian or holder of a valid power of attorney. For a Beneficiary under 18, the parent or legal guardian must consent. We may ask for proof of consent or authority, and we may remove Health Information or pause a Campaign if it is not provided. A Beneficiary may contact us at any time to request that their Health Information be edited or removed, even if they did not create the Campaign.
4.4 Consent. Where the law requires it, we collect and process Health Information only with your express, affirmative consent, obtained through a separate consent request that is not bundled with acceptance of our Terms of Use. You may withdraw consent at any time by emailing [[email protected]] with "Health Data" in the subject line. Withdrawing consent may require us to unpublish or close a medical Campaign, but it does not affect processing that occurred before withdrawal.
4.5 How we use it. We use Health Information only to:
We do not use Health Information for advertising, marketing, profiling, product recommendations, cross-device tracking, or training of machine-learning models, and we do not combine it with data from third parties for those purposes.
4.6 Public Campaign content versus private documents. Health Information that a Campaign Organizer chooses to include in a Campaign page, update or comment is public and may be viewed, copied and indexed by search engines. Please share only what is needed to explain the Campaign, and never post someone else's Health Information without their consent or legal authority. Verification Documents are never published. They are stored separately from Campaign content and are visible only to authorized LaunchGood personnel and service providers who need them for verification.
4.7 Disclosure. We do not sell Health Information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral or targeted advertising. We disclose it only:
4.8 Advertising and analytics on medical Campaigns. We configure our advertising and analytics tools so that Health Information, Campaign titles and URLs that reveal a medical condition, form contents, and Verification Documents are not transmitted to advertising platforms, social media pixels or data brokers. [We disable third-party advertising pixels on Campaign pages categorized as medical.]
4.9 How we protect it. In addition to the measures in Section 9, we protect Health Information with:
4.10 Retention. We keep Verification Documents for [12] months after a Campaign closes, or longer only where required for legal, tax, audit or fraud-prevention purposes, and then securely delete them. Health Information in a public Campaign remains visible while the Campaign is live; you may ask us to unpublish it at any time.
4.11 Your rights. Subject to applicable law, you may request to: access the Health Information we hold about you; correct it; delete it; withdraw consent to its processing; obtain a list of the third parties and service providers with whom we have shared it; and, if you are a California resident, limit our use of your sensitive personal information. Submit requests to [[email protected]]. Section 7.4 explains how we verify requests and handle appeals.
4.12 HIPAA. LaunchGood is not a "covered entity" or "business associate" under the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), so HIPAA generally does not apply to information you share on the Services. We nonetheless apply the protections in this Section. Health Information you post publicly does not carry the protections it would have in your medical records.
4.13 Users in Europe and the UK. Health Information is a special category of personal data under the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation. We process it on the basis of your explicit consent (Article 9(2)(a)), where you have manifestly made it public (Article 9(2)(e)), or where necessary for legal claims (Article 9(2)(f)).
4.14 State consumer health data notice. If you live in Washington, Nevada or Connecticut, or your Health Information is collected there, our Consumer Health Data Privacy Notice (Appendix A) describes additional rights and applies alongside this Section.
4.15 Changes affecting Health Information. We will not apply a material change in how we use or disclose Health Information to data already collected without your consent.
We do not sell personal information. Sharing of Health Information is governed by Section 4.7, which is narrower than this Section.
5.1 Public content. Campaigns, updates, comments and Donor names (unless you give anonymously) can be seen by anyone, may be indexed by search engines, and may be copied or reshared by others. Anonymous donations hide your name from the public, but LaunchGood and the Campaign Organizer can still see it.
5.2 Campaign Organizers. When you donate, we share with the Campaign Organizer only what is needed to process the gift, issue a tax receipt or claim Gift Aid. We share your email address for Campaign updates or the organizer's marketing only if you opt in. Campaign Organizers must use Donor information only for the purposes you agreed to.
5.3 Service providers. We share information with vendors that help us run the Services, such as cloud hosting, payment processing, identity verification, sanctions screening, customer support, email delivery, analytics and legal or accounting advisers. They may use it only to provide services to us, under contracts requiring appropriate safeguards.
5.4 Legal, safety and compliance. We may disclose information when we believe in good faith it is required by law or legal process; needed to enforce our Terms of Use or this Policy; needed to investigate fraud, sanctions violations or misuse of funds; or necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of users, LaunchGood or the public. This includes sharing with other organizations for fraud and spam prevention.
5.5 Business transfers. If LaunchGood is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction, including during due diligence. Any successor must honor this Policy for information collected under it, or notify you before applying a different policy.
5.6 With your consent. We may share information in other ways when you direct or permit us to.
6.1 Cookies and similar technologies. We and our partners use cookies, pixels, software development kits and similar tools to keep you signed in, remember preferences, secure the Services, measure performance, and deliver and measure advertising.
| Type | Purpose | Can you turn it off? |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Sign-in, security, fraud prevention, donation checkout | No, the Services need them |
| Functional | Language, currency and display preferences | Yes |
| Analytics | Understanding how the Services are used | Yes |
| Advertising | Showing and measuring LaunchGood ads on other sites | Yes |
6.2 Analytics. We use analytics providers such as Google Analytics to understand use of the Services. You can opt out of Google Analytics with Google's browser add-on.
6.3 Advertising. We work with advertising partners such as Google and Meta to show LaunchGood ads on other websites and apps and to measure their results. These partners may set their own cookies and may receive hashed contact details to match you with their users. We never use Health Information, or the fact that you created, viewed or donated to a medical Campaign, to target or retarget ads, and our matched audience lists never include it (Section 4.8).
6.4 Your choices. You can manage cookies through [our cookie settings] and your browser settings. You can also opt out of interest-based ads from participating companies through the Digital Advertising Alliance and Network Advertising Initiative, and through your mobile device's ad settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how the Services work.
6.5 Browser signals. We treat a Global Privacy Control signal as a request to opt out of sale or sharing for targeted advertising for that browser, where required by law. [We do not currently respond to other Do Not Track signals.]
7.1 Choices for everyone. You can update your profile in your account settings, give anonymously, unsubscribe from marketing emails using the link in each message, turn off SMS by replying STOP, and turn off push notifications and precise location in your device settings. You can ask us to close your account at any time.
7.2 US state privacy rights. Depending on where you live, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon and other states with comprehensive privacy laws, you may have the right to:
California residents may also request information about disclosures of personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing. Washington, Nevada and Connecticut residents have additional rights over consumer health data (Appendix A).
7.3 EEA and UK rights. You may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, and objection to processing based on legitimate interests or for direct marketing. You may withdraw consent at any time, and you may complain to your local data protection authority.
7.4 How to make a request. Email [[email protected]] with "Privacy Request" in the subject line, or write to us at the address in Section 15. We will verify your identity, usually by confirming details linked to your account, before acting. You may use an authorized agent where the law allows; we may ask the agent for proof of authority. We will respond within the time required by law, generally 30 to 45 days. If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision, and we will respond within [45] days.
7.5 Requests from Beneficiaries. If a Campaign names you or includes information about you, you may ask us to edit or remove it even if you did not create the Campaign.
We keep personal information for as long as your account is open and as needed to provide the Services. After that, we keep it only as long as needed to comply with legal, tax and accounting obligations, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, and enforce our agreements. [Donation and payout records are kept for 7 years.] Verification Documents and other Health Information follow the shorter limits in Section 4.10. Content you published may remain in copies others have made, and may take time to disappear from search engines and backups.
We use administrative, technical and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information, scaled to its sensitivity. These include encryption in transit, access controls, monitoring and vendor oversight, with additional safeguards for Health Information described in Section 4.9. No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee security. Please use a strong, unique password, turn on any available two-step verification, and contact us right away at [[email protected]] if you think your account has been compromised. We will notify affected individuals and regulators of a security breach as required by law.
Donations and payouts are handled by third-party payment processors. They collect and process your card, bank and billing details under their own privacy policies and security standards. We receive transaction confirmations and limited details such as the last four digits of your card, and we do not store full card numbers. We share transaction data with processors only as needed to complete payments, refunds and chargebacks.
LaunchGood is based in the United States and works with service providers in [North America, Europe and Asia]. Your information may be processed in countries whose data protection laws differ from yours. When we transfer personal information from the EEA, UK or Switzerland, we use approved safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where applicable. Health Information of users in those regions is transferred only under such safeguards.
The Services are not directed to children under 13, or under 16 in the EEA and UK, and they may not open accounts. If we learn we have collected personal information from a child under those ages without verified parental consent, we will delete it. A Campaign for a minor, including a medical Campaign, may be created only by the minor's parent or legal guardian, or with that person's documented consent (Section 4.3). To report a concern, contact [[email protected]].
The Services may link to or embed websites and services run by others, including Campaign Organizers and charities. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, not this one, so please review them before sharing information.
We may update this Policy as our Services, the law or industry standards change. We will post the new version here and update the "Last Updated" date. If a change materially affects your rights, we will give additional notice, such as by email or in the Services, before it takes effect. Changes to how we use or disclose Health Information are also subject to Section 4.15.
