Building Capacity, through building our community. 

Two years ago, CAIR-Oregon (Council on American-Islamic Relations - Oregon Chapter) started on a path with no money but a deep passion to fundamentally remake how Oregon responded to hate. We wanted to build a platform where Muslims could feel heard, supported and drive social change. We were not just focused on bringing change for Oregon's Muslims, we wanted to build a better Oregon for everyone. In two years, we've delivered on that, and now we want to do way more. ​

Now we want to build a fully staffed Muslim civil rights organization here in Oregon. Your donation helps us get there. 

When we fight, we win.

Survivors of hate crimes repeatedly told us that they needed more support through Oregon's laws and through many different systems. Mosques were vandalized, Muslims targeted on the streets and when driving and young children were targeted in schools. Thus, we endeavored to change Oregon's hate crime laws and this past spring we SUCCEEDED! Oregon's hate crime laws are now seen as an exemplar for other states to emulate nationwide.​

When we fight, we bring change. 

Early on in our endeavor, we heard so many stories about how Oregon's Muslims were being persistently harassed by the FBI. In addition, to ensuring everyone who called us had access to legal counsel, we wanted to put a stop to local law enforcement working with the FBI. We heard our community when they said that families were being destroyed by the FBI, families like one of our community member's:

“My family’s home was raided when I was 10 years old after several years of very heavy surveillance,” Hobaish told city leaders. “My father was detained on charges that he was not allowed to know for the first portion of the trial.”
Hobaish said a judge eventually found the charges against her father unsubstantiated and threw them out.

“By that time the raid had already destroyed my family,” she told the council. “My father was left chronically underemployed and unable to find skilled labor. My mother was permanently traumatized.” Source credit: OPB

We heard Ms. Hobaish, Brandon Mayfield (who was also harassed by the JTTF and joined us in our advocacy) and the rest of our community and advocated for Portland to leave the JTTF. When the issue came up before the Portland City Council, they WITHDREW from the Joint-Terrorism Task Force (JTTF)!

When we fight, we de-platform hate groups.

Hate groups have repeatedly come to Oregon to spread their hate. They are anti-Muslim, anti-Semitic and deeply hateful of marginalized groups. We have worked tirelessly to remove their access to funding through working with companies to stand firm in their Terms of Service. Companies like Teespring, GivingFuel and PayPal have held to that commitment. ​
