Help support a Hijabi inspired, handmade kids product line showcase at their first Muslim Expo

Let children be children and toys, their companion.

Aishah (ra) said “I used to play with dolls in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and I had female friends who would play with me…” al-Bukhaari, 6130; Muslim, 2440

Assamualaikum, my name is Akmal and I make contemporary Hijabi inspired dolls and products on Etsy (www.dzaltastic.etsy.com). My brand, Dzaltastic, started in a little sewing room in Malaysia, taking custom sewing orders from family and friends. Dzaltastic focuses on creating aesthetically made Hijabi inspired nursery décor and toys fit for the modern Muslim home. I’m now on the search to find backers to sponsor my brand to showcase at our very first Muslim Expo!

I started actively sewing after I quit my job to become a stay at home mother. As a way to record my craft, I took to Instagram (@dzaltastic / www.instagram.com/dzaltastic) as the perfect platform to share my sewing projects and had the opportunity to collaborate with some very talented people. I designed my first hijabi packaging for a hijab collaboration and from then on, I was hooked!

When I was asked to submit products for another collaboration, I decided to venture out of my comfort zone and make stuffed dolls. But since I wear the hijab, the doll just had to be a hijabi! There has yet to be a faceless Hijabi Doll with a modern minimalistic design, hence, the first Dzaltastic Hijabi Doll was created.

Alhamdulillah, I found that the hijab dolls were not only well received in Malaysia but also by sisters from around the globe. It was the perfect Eid gift! From then on, Dzaltastic has been creating modern Islamic products combining my work of surface pattern designing as well as sewing.

It’s been more than a year of sharing my work online and just a few months ago I’ve even designed the first Hijabi Flip Doll to enter the famous Sew Mama Sew’s Softie Contest. The doll was inspired by the famous ‘what do you have underneath your hijab?’ question which we’ve quite often joked about yet forget that it’s the right opportunity to make da’wah. My Flip Doll portrays a hijabi on one side (normally in the mornings/outside the house) while the other side shows a girl without her hijab (night time/inside the house). Though I didn't win, it is the perfect tool for Islamic education!

In sha Allah, with your support, many more hijabi inspired products soon to come!

When my husband was offered a scholarship to continue his studies in the UK, my dream for Dzaltastic was to push it futher and promote my Hijabi inspired products to Muslims in the UK before we return to our home country.

However, as much as we plan, Allah is the best of planners, few months after arriving in UK, I suffered from a tragic miscarriage and had to cease all plans for Dzaltastic. Alhamdulillah, after recuperating, I started work again making hijab dolls, taking my time and slowly opened up my online Etsy shop.

The support has been wonderful from sisters all over the globe, MasyaAllah and I’ve been receiving numerous love and compliments for my work. To date, I have retailers in US, UK and Canada stocking my Muslim Heroes plushies, alhamdulillah.

However, the profit from my sales is still not enough to fund my ambition to join a trade fair or an expo. This crowdfunding project is set up to help me seek funds to showcase at a UK Muslim expo, namely the Muslim Lifestyle Expo (MLE) on the 1-2 August 2015 at the Ricoh Centre, Conventry, UK. The MLExpo team has kindly promised to hold a booth for me if I can get the funds by the end of the month. Help sponsor me as an exhibitor at my first Muslim Expo by pledging your donation to my project before then. Hurry, time is running out!

Here’s what the organising team of Muslim Lifestyle Expo has to say about the event:

"The Muslim Lifestyle Expo (MLE) will be the first Lifestyle event of its kind in the UK that brings together the best of the thriving global Halal economies in one central location. We’re creating an exciting platform for global business to showcase their products and services to Muslim and non-Muslim consumers in an all inclusive dynamic, fun and inspiring family friendly environment."

Most of my marketing and selling has been online and the MLExpo seems like a good place to try my hand at offline and face to face selling. There are plenty of art and craft fairs throughout the country, however, none directly targeting the Muslim community. This will be a chance for direct selling due to their family friendly environment (they’ll have bouncy castles, face painting, rides and story time, yay!) so a lot of Muslim children will also be at the event.

It’ll be a great chance for me to introduce my dolls to a wider UK Muslim audience and have a better understanding of the global Muslim community to help shape my products. As I’ll be leaving the country soon, it’s definitely an opportunity not to be missed. It’ll be the place to boost my global network, meet other Muslim entrepreneurs and other retailers who would be able to stock my creations.

And finally, it’ll be an honour to represent Creative Muslim Women at the event. Globally, there’s been a lot of support for creative women, but creative Muslim women dabbling in crafts are still under appreciated and rarely highlighted. Hopefully, it’ll be a chance to share the craft of a Muslim handmade artist and modern sewist, in sha Allah.

So where does your money go to? The money goes to paying for the exhibitor’s booth, accommodation, food and transportation for the 2 day event. Other portions will also go to setting up the booth, brochures, name cards and preparing more products for the event. We’ll also be putting aside the funds to pay off and reward you, our backers. And to round out the figure, all extras will go to future product expansion.

Check out the reward deals! Donate some funds and get rewarded while you’re at it. Updated (11/5/2015) with a new Paypal link to also easily donate through Paypal. Just click this button:

Dzaltastic Crowdfunding Update - 28/06/2015

Assalamualaikum brothers and sisters,

Dropping a line to say Ramadan Mubarak and may it be a month full of baraka. I still can't thank you all enough for donating and for sharing my campaign! Thank you, thank you, thank you! MashaAllah, may Allah bless you all for it and return your good deeds with hasanat and abundance of rizq.

Here's an update of what's going on right now. It's only a month left to the Expo which is on the 1st of August and I have loads to do to get ready for it.

Countdown

5 more weeks: 29/6 - 5/7/2015 (Complete all Eid custom orders and restock Etsy inventory. Phew! Have been doing this for 3 weeks already. I only took 5 custom orders really, but some from this batch are also going to the expo, insyaAllah)

4 more weeks: 6 - 12/7/2015 (Making hijabi doll for the Expo, really it takes about a week to make about 10!)

3 more weeks: 13 – 19/7/2015 (Making hijabi dolls and pillows for the Expo)

2 more weeks: 20 - 26/7/2015 (Completing all plushies for the Expo once custom printed fabrics arrive)

1 more week: 27 - 31/7/2015 (Focus fully on stall decor and getting things organized for the expo)

I'm already freaking out! I'm super excited, but the workload is really a looooot for a one woman team. For those on Instagram and Facebook cheering me on, thank you! You've been a motivator and inspiration for me to keep on doing this, despite the early mornings and the late nights.

For all reward receivers, you deserve me apologies for the delay in getting them ready. Fabric printing itself takes 3-4 weeks to complete and it'll most probably clash with Expo preparations, so in order to maintain sanity, I'll only be able to focus fully on them after the expo. I know some of you are really looking forward to them and if you're rushing to get them (maybe for Eid or other celebrations), please email me at dzaltastic@gmail.com and I can send you a non-personalised one (if you don't mind) which I have in stock. Sorry for this miscalculation as I wasn't really thinking of them as Eid gifts when I launched the campaign, but some of you were well ahead in your Eid shopping. Sorrrryyyy!

Again, thank you all for your generosity and you are in my du'as. These past few months has been such a roller coaster ride for me. If you feel the need to reply to this email, send me at line at dzaltastic@gmail.com, I could use a few extra cheerleaders.

Akmal signing out. Peace!
