Become catalysts for change from within, by assisting in training the Muslim leadership and community to recognize and prevent domestic violence!
"O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both..." Qur'an - 4:135
On a monthly basis we hear stories of vulnerable women being turned away from their local masjid, their safe haven, being told their abuse is something they should be "patient" with and "reflective about," that this pain too is a test from Allah. And often enough, we hear Imams & Chaplains at our trainings share their stories of guilt, embarrassment and trauma of turning someone back into their abusive situation not knowing the simple signs of abuse and prevention. Truth is, many of our Imams, Chaplains and community leaders are not prepared to deal with domestic violence, nor are they trained to know the signs. Islam holds its followers responsible for speaking out against injustice and doing whatever is possible to end all forms of oppression (Quran - 5:8; 5:135, 42:42-43).
The Peaceful Families Project (PFP) advocates for domestic violence awareness by facilitating workshops for Muslim leaders and communities across America. Rates of domestic violence in the Muslim community are at comparable levels to other faith groups in the United States (Alkhateeb 1998). Our goal is for the Muslim leadership and community to recognize this reality and become catalysts for change from within.
Our imams & chaplains work tirelessly to serve our communities, going above and beyond any job description. Yet rarely do they have training opportunities to increase their knowledge and expertise in fostering peaceful Muslim families. Imams and chaplains are often the first line of support when families need help. This annual workshop provides imams and chaplains with the support of their peers, professional guidance to improve counseling skills, and an opportunity to gain best practices for the prevention of domestic violence.
