A Walk for Water: Amira’s Daily Journey

Every morning at 5:00 AM, while her peers in other parts of the world prepare for school, 9-year-old Amira grabs two heavy plastic jerrycans and begins a 4-kilometer walk across dusty, uneven paths.

She walks to an open, muddy pool—the village's only water source—shared with local livestock. Her mothers and sisters boil what they can, but sickness from waterborne illness is still a constant fear in her household. Worse still, by the time Amira completes her daily trip to carry the heavy loads back, the school day has already begun.

When asked what she dreams of becoming, Amira doesn't hesitate: "A teacher." But without safe, nearby water, her days are spent fetching water instead of learning.

In many vulnerable communities, families still struggle to access safe drinking water. People may walk long distances to find water, while the water available can be unsafe for drinking, cooking and daily use. Children are especially affected, as time spent collecting water can also take them away from school and other important activities.

This campaign aims to bring clean, safe and sustainable drinking water to entire villages and vulnerable communities through the development of water wells and borehole.
