Renovate Broken Maternity Ward in Poor Community in Sierra Leone.

The Murray Town Community Health Center in Sierra Leone is a lifeline for over 21,000 residents in the area. But its maternity ward is in dire need of renovation to make childbirth safer, prevent unnecessary deaths, and give health workers the tools they need to save lives. This project is done in collaboration with Sudu Salone! Read below for full details:

This isn’t just about fixing a building—it’s about tackling Sierra Leone’s heartbreaking maternal mortality rates and creating a healthier future for mothers and babies.

With $7,450, we can transform the maternity wing, ensuring safer deliveries for over 1,000 moms and newborns every year. Together, we can turn this vision into reality and give Murray Town the care it deserves.

Impact of the Renovation to the Maternity Ward:

Annual Beneficiaries: It will ensure quality and direct care for more than 1,000 mothers and newborns annually.

Maternal Mortality Rates: Sierra Leone has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world. This project, therefore, intends to reduce the rate of preventable deaths by making conditions for birth much safer.

Community Coverage: Murray Town serves over 21,000 people. Increase in health access will cover displaced families, households of low-income status, among other vulnerable groups.

Improved Infrastructure: Newer facilities will reduce the infection rates, hence safer environments for births.

While $7,450 remains our ultimate goal, we have prepared a phased plan in case we raise only part of the funds:

If we raise $2,500, we will focus on the most urgent needs, safety and shelter.

  1. First, we will begin with site preparation and demolition. This includes setting up temporary storage, removing the damaged roof, bringing in tools, and ensuring access to utilities. This step is essential and will cost about $360.
  2. Next, we will use the remaining $2,140 to start partial roofing, especially for critical areas like the delivery room. This will include roof framing with treated timber and fitting some Aluzinc roofing sheets.
  3. If possible, we’ll also start basic ceiling work in those areas to make them usable for limited services.

If we raise $5,000, this amount will allow us to complete Phase 1 of the project (will make the building structurally sound, weatherproof, and secure, transforming the space into a safer and more functional environment for mothers and newborns). It will include:

  1. Full demolition and site preparation.
  2. Complete roof installation (trusses, sheets, gutters, and downpipes).
  3. Ceiling work using treated materials.
  4. Repair or replacement of steel doors and windows.
