UNSAFE AT HOME: This Ramadan, be the mercy they can't find at home

The UK Reality

262 deaths relating to domestic abuse were recorded in England and Wales between April 2023 and March 2024, including 164 homicide victims and 98 suspected victim suicides. (National Domestic Homicide Project, 2024). Every death is a human being. And every death is a person who leaves behind a grieving family and long lasting devastation.

“Whoever saves one life, it is as if he had saved all of mankind.” (Qur’an 5:32)

For the second consecutive year, domestic abuse related suicides have surpassed number of homicides due to domestic abuse. (National Domestic Homicide Project, 2025)

2.3 million survivors aged 16 and over experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2024; that's 1.6 million women and 712,000 men. (Office for National Statistics, 2024)

One in five children in the UK experience domestic abuse. Over 105,000 children live in homes where there is high-risk domestic abuse. (SafeLives, 2023)

Survivors from minoritised ethnic communities typically suffer abuse for 1.5 times longer before getting help than White British or Irish survivors. (SafeLives, 2019)

Abuse Is Often Hidden, But Always Harms

When we think of domestic abuse, we often picture violence between intimate partners.

But the truth is far more complex and can be deadly.

Domestic abuse can also be from adult children to parents, in-laws to daughters-in-law, an adult sibling to another, and across every family relationship. It crosses every boundary we hold sacred. And it kills.

Even when it does not kill, it destroys. Domestic abuse includes coercive control, emotional manipulation, financial abuse, and psychological harm. These forms do not leave visible bruises, but they destroy lives—and can be just as deadly. They shatter mental health, tears apart families, and traumatise children who witness it. The harm ripples through generations.

Why Nour?

"Whoever relieves a believer's distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allah will rescue him from a difficulty of the difficulties of the Hereafter." (Sahih Muslim)

Nour means "light"; because we bring light into the darkest moments of survivors' lives.

We support survivors from minoritised backgrounds through deeply relational, culturally attuned, compassionate, and trauma-responsive care.

We embody the mercy and justice that Islam commands: "O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even if it be against yourselves, your parents, and your relatives." (Quran 4:135)

We understand the unique barriers survivors from minoritised communities face:

  • Fear of prejudice or racist responses from statutory services
  • Pressure from extended family to stay silent
  • Language barriers
  • Immigration concerns and no recourse to public funds
  • Cultural isolation

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Save yourself from the Hellfire even by giving half a date in charity." (Sahih Bukhari)

This Ramadan: A Sacred Duty

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you are those who are best to their families." (Tirmidhi)

Yet for too many, home is not a place of mercy—it is a place of fear and danger.

Allah (SWT) says: "Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression." (Quran 16:90)

The Prophet ﷺ taught us: "Whosoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart." (Sahih Muslim)

Break the Silence. Stand up for the Oppressed.

"Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy." (Sahih Bukhari)

Allah (SWT) has forbidden oppression in all its forms.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or an oppressed." A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, I can help him if he is oppressed, but how can I help him if he is an oppressor?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "By preventing him from oppressing others." (Sahih Bukhari)

"The merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on earth, and the One in the heavens will be merciful to you." (Tirmidhi)

Domestic abuse thrives in silence. It hides behind closed doors, protected by shame, fear, and misunderstanding. But silence in the face of oppression is not mercy; it is complicity.

This Ramadan you can be the mercy someone cannot find at home.

Your donation and support create ripples of healing. Every person we help becomes equipped to break the cycle of abuse for future generations.

When home becomes unsafe, Nour becomes sanctuary.
When families fail, the Ummah must rise.

"The believers, in their love, mercy, and kindness to one another are like a body: if any part of it is ill, the entire body shares its sleeplessness and fever." (Sahih Bukhari)
