Muslims Help Families of the Victims of the San Bernardino Shooting

American Muslims Respond:
Fundraiser for Victims' Families

At least 14 people were killed and 17 more wounded in San Bernardino, California where up to 3 attackers went on a shooting spree at a regional center that serves those with special needs. The San Bernardino families lost their loved ones in a deplorable act of violence.  This is why a collective of American Muslim leaders and groups have united to raise funds for the victims' families.

We wish to respond to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action. Our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: "Have mercy to those on earth, and the One in the Heavens (God) will have mercy upon you." And the Quran teaches to "Repel evil by that which is better" (41:34).

All fundraising proceeds will help with the immediate, short-term needs of the grieving families. No amount of money will bring back their loved ones, but we do hope to lessen their burden in some way. Since the campaign has continued to exceed every new goal we set (initial goal was $50,000), we may even be able to assist families with longer-term expenses or possibly donate to the regional center where the shooting took place.

Though this is a Muslim-led campaign, we welcome our friends of other faiths to also contribute. Funds will be distributed to the victims' families by the MiNDS Network (more on MiNDS below).

We ask for American Muslim mosques, Imams, leaders, and groups to endorse and promote this initiative. Official endorsers of the campaign are only required to help promote it via email and social media. For media inquiries please email

Re: A request (4 Albuquerque murders)

    Dear Donor,

In December 2015, you donated to support our CelebrateMercy campaign: Muslims Unite for San Bernardino. Thank you for being a part of raising over $215,000 for families of the victims killed and wounded in the mass shooting in San Bernardino.

I'm part of the CelebrateMercy team and wanted to inform you of our new campaign: raising funds for families of the 4 Muslim shooting victims in New Mexico. A horrific string of killings has recently taken the lives of four Muslim men in Albuquerque. Initial reports suggest that anti-Shia hatred may have played a role in these murders. We are now raising funds for the four victims' families; so far, we've raised $20,000 in the first 2 days! Our goal is to raise $40,000.

Though CelebrateMercy is a Sunni-led Muslim organization, we invite collaboration with Sunni and Shia organizations on this campaign - as well as friends of other faiths. To date, 10 organizations and many Muslim leaders have endorsed this campaign.  See the official flyer above. You can learn more, volunteer and donate here:

Congrats - you did it ($200K)! Muslims United for San Bernardino Families

Salams,  today we can proudly say that we have reached a remarkable feat in our community's history and have demonstrated serious resolve by raising over $200,000 for those afflicted by the recent tragedy in San Bernardino, CA.

Yesterday (12/11/15), we flew in the father of one the deceased who was stuck in another state and was otherwise unable to make it to her funeral. His presence at a gathering last night, hosted by Senator Connie Levya, was brief but a somber reminder of the grief faced by these families. At this get together, one of the Muslim ER Medical Residents (visibly so due to her hijab), who was on-shift at the county hospital the day of the tragedy, treating the victims, recalled her experience that moved all the the public officials and Intefaith leaders present.

We delivered the first check amounting to $100K that was the largest first sum received by United Way as other foundations begin to pitch. The United Way was designated by San Bernardino County for all contributors to channel their funds to families of the victims. 100% of these proceeds were earmarked for these families.

Please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Jazakallah Khairan and many blessings!
