A Humble Beginning, A Bold Vision

What started in the basement of a small grocery store on Hillside Avenue in Floral Park, Queens, New York, has evolved into a spiritual and community center for Muslims in Queens, New Hyde Park, and beyond. In the early 2000s, a group of devoted individuals initiated regular prayer services and children's Islamic education. They gradually moved from temporary locations to pursue a larger vision for a permanent center.

A Community Rises to the Challenge

In 2003, Hillside Islamic Center embarked on a remarkable journey of faith. With only $35,000, our community united to purchase 300 Hillside Avenue for $725,000. By the grace of Allah (SWT) and the dedication of every member, we raised the full amount in just three months. This defining moment showcased the extraordinary power of our unity and trust in Allah and each other, proving that together, we can achieve the impossible.

Growth Fueled by Faith and Generosity

As our congregation rapidly grew, so did our needs. We acquired four adjacent properties, overcame zoning and neighborhood challenges, and began the construction of a new masjid in 2011, all without ever taking a bank loan. The building, completed in 2014 just before Ramadan, was a triumph not only of architecture but of unity, perseverance, and unwavering faith.

More Than a Masjid

Today, Hillside Islamic Center thrives as a vibrant community center, offering far more than just daily prayers. We provide an array of enriching programs, including children’s education, youth groups, interfaith outreach, and community services, alongside a diverse selection of events designed for brothers and sisters of every age. HIC is home to people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, race, etc. and has truly blossomed into the heartbeat of our community—a welcoming sanctuary where congregants unite, children thrive in their Islamic studies, youth discover their identities and purpose, and individuals from all walks of life deepen their connection to Allah and one another.

Ongoing Community Impact

Alhamdulillah, our center remains deeply committed to humanitarian efforts both locally and globally. We have organized fundraisers for Gaza, supported international flood relief initiatives, and consistently contributed to trusted relief organizations such as IRUSA, ICNA, BASMAH, MAS, Zakat Foundation, and others. Through these efforts, our community continues to extend compassion and aid to those in need around the world.

The Next Chapter: Expansion for the Future

As part of our long-term vision, we have already acquired two adjacent properties for a total of $1,775,000, using funds previously raised through the generosity of our community. These acquisitions mark a critical step in expanding our facilities and ensuring we have the space needed to serve future generations.

Alhamdulillah, our community is flourishing, bringing with it a growing demand for our space and services. To meet this need, we’re excited to launch a $2 million expansion campaign to enhance our prayer area, including the 2nd and 3rd floors, expand parking, and improve our facilities.

By Allah’s grace and through the incredible generosity of our community, we have already raised over $600,000 toward this vital expansion. This remarkable progress reflects our shared dedication and the strength of our collective vision for the future.

This initiative goes beyond construction; it’s a commitment to preserving our legacy and creating a nurturing space for future generations to learn, worship, and thrive together as a united ummah. Together, let’s build a brighter future for our community!

Four Phases of Progress: How We’ll Build the Future

• PHASE 1 – $600,000:
  Mobilization, demolition of existing structures, and installation of a new parking lot to improve access and safety.
• PHASE 2 – $500,000:
  Steel framing of the 3rd floor, including the roof and structural walls, preparing for vertical expansion.
• PHASE 3 – $400,000:
  Installation of a new elevator and staircases to ensure accessibility and meet modern safety standards.
• PHASE 4 – $500,000:
  First-floor modifications, HVAC installation, sprinkler and fire alarm systems, and upgraded electrical and sound systems for improved functionality and compliance.

A Sacred Investment in Our Future

In partnership with other local masajid, Hillside Islamic Center is embarking on a vital $5 million project to acquire a dedicated Muslim cemetery in Long Island. As the Muslim community continues to grow in Long Island and NYC, this project will provide approximately 21,000 new burial spaces, ensuring that our loved ones have a dignified resting place by Islamic tradition for generations to come.
