Storing solar energy as thermal heat to provide reliable, off-grid home heating.

Rohingya. Cold nights follow dark days.

What if sunlight captured by day kept families warm at night?

Solar energy stored as thermal heat — reliable, off-grid home heating.

No fuel convoys. No fragile grids. Just stored warmth.

Resilience begins with heat, dignity, and self-reliance.

Heat Is Survival Infrastructure

Help us reach our goal of $25,000 to develop and refine solar-powered sand battery heating systems designed for off-grid and energy-constrained environments.

In many regions, access to electricity is unreliable — but access to heat is even more critical.

Without reliable heating:

• Homes become unsafe in cold conditions
• Families burn scarce fuel
• Indoor air quality declines
• Energy costs become unsustainable

This project focuses on capturing solar energy and storing it as thermal heat in sand — creating a long-duration, fuel-free heating solution.

Raising Funds to Build Renewable Heating Infrastructure

Nushoor Institute is a 501(c)(3) social incubator based in Buffalo, NY. We develop decentralized systems in food, energy, water, and public health designed for constrained environments.

This campaign supports our Solar Concentrator + Sand Battery project, which converts solar radiation into stored thermal energy that can be released gradually to heat homes.

Rather than relying on fuel-based heating or grid electricity, this system:

• Uses concentrated solar input
• Stores heat in sand (a low-cost, abundant material)
• Releases heat over extended periods
• Operates independently of centralized power grids

The goal is heating systems that are renewable, repairable, and locally maintainable.

System Design

The system consists of three primary components:

Solar Concentrator

Reflective surfaces focus sunlight onto a central absorber, converting solar radiation into thermal energy.

Resistive / Thermal Conversion

Electrical or direct thermal transfer mechanisms raise the temperature of a contained sand mass.

Sand Battery Storage

Insulated sand chambers retain heat for extended durations, allowing warmth to be distributed when needed — even after sunset.

Sand is ideal because it is:

• Low cost
• Widely available
• Non-toxic
• Thermally stable at high temperatures

Home Heating Integration

Stored heat can be used to:

• Warm indoor living spaces
• Supplement home heating systems
• Reduce reliance on fuel
• Provide emergency warmth in off-grid environments

This system integrates naturally into Nushoor’s broader decentralized energy ecosystem, including:

• Solar panels
• Portable Power Stations
• Wind systems

Together, they form a multi-layered resilience network.

Current Status

Development is focused on:

• Optimizing solar concentration geometry
• Improving sand containment and insulation performance
• Reducing heat loss over extended storage periods
• Evaluating safe heat distribution mechanisms
• Testing modular scalability for household-level deployment

Prototype testing is ongoing to measure:

• Thermal retention duration
• Peak temperature capacity
• Insulation efficiency
• Energy input-to-heat output ratios

The next milestone is extended-duration heating trials under real environmental conditions.

Why This Matters

Electricity powers devices.

Heat protects lives.

In cold environments, lack of heating can be life-threatening.

Fuel-based systems create dependency and cost burdens. Grid-based systems are vulnerable to outages.

Solar sand battery systems provide:

• Long-duration heat storage
• Renewable input
• Minimal operating cost
• High durability
• Simple materials

This project is about transforming sunlight into stored warmth that cannot simply be shut off.

How Your Donations Will Be Used

Funds raised will support:

• Reflective materials for solar concentration
• Thermal absorber development
• Insulated sand chamber construction
• Temperature monitoring systems
• Safety testing and refinement
• Modular housing integration design
• Student engineer stipends
• Documentation for open-source replication

This campaign supports the 2026 development cycle of the Solar Sand Battery Heating project.
