raised of $5,000 USD goal
Help us reach our goal of $25,000 to expand development of modular wind turbine systems designed for constrained and off-grid environments.
In many regions, centralized power infrastructure is unreliable, damaged, or inaccessible.
When electricity fails:
• Homes lose lighting
• Communication stops
• Medical devices shut down
• Water systems stall
This project focuses on building wind-powered energy systems that can be fabricated from locally available and salvaged materials — reducing dependency on fragile supply chains and imported infrastructure.
Harnessing wind for renewable power
Nushoor Institute is a 501(c)(3) social incubator based in Buffalo, NY. We develop decentralized systems in food, energy, water, and public health that communities can build, repair, and replicate themselves.
This campaign supports the continued development of our Modular Wind Turbine Project, engineered to produce between 50 and 1000 watts of electricity depending on system configuration.
Rather than importing commercial turbines, we prioritize:
• Repurposed washing machine motors
• Salvaged car alternators
• Reclaimed structural materials
• Locally fabricated blades
The goal is energy systems built from what remains.
The wind turbine system is designed to:
• Capture wind energy using modular blade assemblies
• Convert mechanical motion into electrical output
• Integrate directly with the Nushoor Portable Power Station
• Charge batteries for later use
• Support lighting, communication, and small medical devices
Two scalable system sizes are under development:
Units can be connected in parallel to increase charging capacity.
Converting mechanical energy into electricity.
To maximize accessibility and replicability, the system uses:
• Washing machine motors (100–400W DC output)
• Car alternators (200–1000W AC output with inverter support)
• Treadmill motors and smaller DC units
• Plastic barrels
• Jerrycans
• Scrap metal
• Wood panels
• Reclaimed building materials
• Metal or plastic piping
• Scrap wood
• Recycled tires and rubble for stabilization
The design prioritizes repairability, modularity, and safe integration with battery storage systems.
Wind turbine designs, horizontal vs vertical axis.
The wind turbine system is designed to work seamlessly with:
• Nushoor Portable Power Stations
• Pedal-powered generators
• Repaired solar panels
Together, these components form a decentralized micro-energy network capable of operating independently of centralized grids.
Repurposing motors for energy generation
Development is underway using repurposed washing machine motors as generators.
Ongoing engineering work includes:
• Blade optimization for improved wind capture
• Mechanical coupling refinement
• Electrical output stabilization
• Safe battery integration
• Structural durability testing
The system is transitioning from prototype experimentation to scalable deployment-ready models.
Renewable energy generation must be:
• Accessible
• Repairable
• Locally maintainable
• Adaptable to changing conditions
Wind energy offers a renewable input that requires no fuel once installed.
When integrated with decentralized storage, it provides reliable electricity in environments where infrastructure cannot be trusted.
This project is about building power systems that communities can construct and sustain themselves.
Funds raised will support:
• Generator sourcing and modification
• Blade fabrication materials
• Structural tower and base materials
• Electrical components (wiring, regulators, inverters)
• Safety testing and output stabilization
• Student engineer stipends
• Documentation for open-source replication
• Prototype refinement and scaling
This campaign supports the 2026 development cycle of the Modular Wind Turbine project.

"People around the globe have been very dependent on this aid. I remember this when I was young as well back in Afghanistan, aid was coming in, giving people what they need but it was limiting the people in these regions who are hurt and broken. What they need is how to do stuff"
