Famine is imminent in Sudan!

As the conflict in Sudan enters its sixteenth month, tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions have been displaced in the world's biggest humanitarian crisis.   According to the United Nations - Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 24 million need assistance and only one-third of those most in need have been reached.  The UNICEF estimates that approximately 4 million children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition, and if timely intervention is not provided, more than 700,000 children with severe acute malnutrition may die from starvation.

On June 24th, 2024, the war spread to the cities of Sinja and Sennar displacing an estimated 136,000 innocent civilians to neighboring Gedarif and Kassala states. 

The living conditions of internally displaced people are terrible; they stay in overcrowded shelters (schools repurposed to accommodate the internally displaced) have restricted access to food and clean water, and have inadequate access to healthcare facilities.

SAMA feeding efforts

Since the start of the war, the Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA)* has collaborated with local partners in Sudan to deliver emergency food assistance to internally displaced persons in the White Nile, Sinnar, and Red Sea States. To date, we have been able to secure daily meals for over 15,000 IDPs.

SAMA utilizes funds to purchase raw food supplies, including vegetables, oils, lentils, cereals, and other items, from local vendors and transports them to IDP centers. These items are prepared by internally displaced people and served as meals. Each meal costs 33 cents.  At the heart of this project is the active participation of internally displaced persons in preparing meals, which creates a supportive environment that empowers the displaced.

The crisis in Sudan has been tragically underfunded and overlooked by the international community, earning it the somber title of "the forgotten war." But you have not forgotten Sudan.
