In Islam, caring for orphans is considered a very important act of compassion and worship. The Arabic word for an orphan is “yateem” (يتيم), meaning a child whose father has died before the child reaches adulthood
.
Importance of Orphans in Islam
Islam strongly encourages Muslims to protect, support, and care for orphans. Many verses in the Qur’an and sayings of the Prophet emphasize their rights.
The Qur’an repeatedly commands believers not to mistreat or neglect orphans.
Supporting an orphan is considered a highly rewarded charity (sadaqah).
Teaching of the Prophet
The Prophet Muhammad himself was an orphan—his father died before he was born and his mother died when he was young. Because of this, Islam gives special attention to the care of orphans.
One famous saying (Hadith) states:
“The one who cares for an orphan and I will be together in Paradise like this,”
and he held his two fingers close together.
