Equip Ugandan medical students with stethoscopes to enhance their clinical skills ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare in their local communities.

Together, we can send stethoscopes to the future healers in Uganda for a healthier and more equitable tomorrow!

Imagine living in Uganda, a country blessed with natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, but a place where many individuals and families face a heartbreaking reality – the daily struggle to access quality healthcare. Limited medical professionals and a lack of the most basic diagnostic medical devices place an immense strain on the lives of those who call this beautiful country home as their daily struggles highlight the urgent need for equitable access to healthcare for all.

To help address this systemic issue, Glia has partnered once again with Make a Medic to help equip the next generation of doctors with the most impactful tool in their medical toolkit – a stethoscope.  Medical students in Uganda studying at Makerere University need our help as they face significant barriers to acquiring their own stethoscopes.

The cost of stethoscopes poses a significant barrier for these aspiring medical students. This financial burden prevents many from acquiring this essential diagnostic instrument, hindering the development of their fundamental diagnostic skills. By endorsing this initiative, every dollar contributed will be used towards equipping one of the 600 deserving students with this fundamental diagnostic tool, enabling them to nurture their clinical expertise. Ultimately, this empowerment will lead to improved patient outcomes once these students graduate and serve their local communities, bridging the healthcare gap for those in need.

Please consider donating today to send stethoscopes to Uganda and help change this gap in healthcare equality!

Reflection on Steth-of-Hope 2021

In 2021, Glia paired up with Make A Medic in support of their Steth-of-Hope Campaign. In general, the UK-based organization aims to support the education of medical students and facilitate public health initiatives in low and middle-income countries. The projects they run range from providing medical equipment (such as stethoscopes) to funding training programs. During our collaboration, enough funds were raised to supply 200 Glia stethoscopes to those in need. These devices were shipped and distributed to fourth-year medical students - 100 each at the Egerton University in Kenya and the University of Zambia Medical School.

As all young doctors and medical students will be able to nostalgically recall the moment that they received their first stethoscope, a seminal moment in every medical career, Glia was happy to work with Make A Medic on this project and help these 200 students feel that much closer to becoming a doctor. As it's not secret, in many parts of the world, essential basic yet primary tools, such as stethoscopes, are not easily accessible or readily available. This can have a major impact on the ability of students to perform clinical examinations, formulate diagnoses, and appropriately manage patients.

Update: Steth-of-Hope is back for 2024

Thanks to the incredible generosity of past donors, the inaugural Steth-of-Hope campaign in 2021 was a monumental success! Teaming up with Make A Medic, 200 stethoscopes were delivered to universities in Kenya and Zambia. The impact has been profound; students still rave about how receiving their stethoscope has sharpened their skills as future physicians.

Steth-of-Hope 2021 Recipients using Glia Stethoscopes

To learn more about the impact of our past campaign, check out the article "After a Resounding Success in 2021, Steth-of-Hope is Back!" penned by Make A Medic’s Dr. Syra Dhillon, who met with recipients in Kenya after they had some time to learn to use them.

Now, In 2024, we're determined to replicate this success by empowering 200 more students in Uganda and providing them with stethoscopes. The generous support for this campaign to date ensures that we are well on our way, however, we still need more support to reach this goal and make a lasting difference in health care in Uganda.

Please donate today during this year’s Heart Health Month and help us continue our mission of improving healthcare accessibility.

Thank you to our past and present donors for your unwavering support!

Update: Heart Health Month & the Steth-of-Hope Campaign

Steth-of-Hope Supporters,

As we step into February, we're excited to bring you an update on our campaign, "Steth-of-Hope," supporting Uganda's medical students with essential stethoscopes. This month, we're aligning our efforts with Heart Health Month (February 1-29), underscoring the vital connection between our campaign and the broader initiative to promote cardiovascular well-being.

February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart health, and your contributions to "Steth-of-Hope" directly contribute to this cause. By providing students with these essential diagnostic tools, you are investing in the next generation of healthcare providers who will play a crucial role in cardiovascular care in Uganda.  As described by Dr. Nathan Mugenyi, a Global Health Researcher in Uganda:

"Empowering healthcare students with stethoscopes through the Steth-of-Hope campaign is not just an investment in medical instruments. It’s a heartbeat of progress for Uganda’s health systems. Each stethoscope echoes a commitment to better diagnostics, enhanced patient care, and ultimately, a healthier nation. With the Steth-of-Hope, we amplify the rhythm of compassion, expertise, and hope, resonating across communities, fostering a symphony of well-being in Uganda’s healthcare landscape.”

We're thrilled to share that your generosity thus far has propelled us closer to our goal. Thanks to your support, we will be able to provide a growing number of medical students in Uganda with high-quality stethoscopes, empowering them on their journey to becoming skilled healthcare professionals.  We still have a way to go before we reach our goal, and we’ll be spreading awareness of this campaign through social media, our website, news and events articles, and emails sent out to our community members.

Join us in making this Heart Health Month memorable by supporting our campaign and sharing our mission with your circles.
