Creating an online network for spiritual & community support for Muslims living with disabilities and for their loved ones

Addressing the Needs of 600,000+ Muslims

Almost one-third of all families in the United States have at least one family member living with a disability. American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) estimates that there are over 600,000 Muslims living with disabilities in the United States alone. Over the course of our work, we learned about some of the most common challenges they and their loved ones face, and sought to help address these needs.

The result of these efforts is EnabledMuslim, an online network for community support to help fulfill the physical, social, and spiritual needs of Muslims living with disabilities and of their loved ones.

We believe that as more Muslims impacted by disability begin to actively network and share information, the shared challenges typically associated with managing a disability lifestyle will transform into joy, inspiration, and ease in their efforts to connect with the Creator of all. In order to make this possible, we need your help.

[Image Description: Imam Zaid Shakir looks into the camera and there is a quote which reads, "May Allah ta'ala... bless all of those members in our community who are challenged by various disabilities, and bless us to be a source of support just as they support us in wonderful ways. We're all in this together.... Muslims are unto each other like individual bricks in a wall; each one strengthens and supports the next."]

What Your Donations Will Help Us Do

1. Develop a fully web accessible online support network so Muslims living with disabilities and their loved ones can connect with one another about shared concerns. Support network features will include:
  • Discussions around shared concerns related to your disability, Islamic practice, Muslim community, and more
  • Connections with others by geographic location, to find out more about disability services and the community near you
  • Easy navigation that is accessible for those with visual impairment and other disabilities

2. Continue to create and enhance new resources specific to Muslims living with disabilities, empowering them with the information and tools they need to make their own decisions about their physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being. Resources include:
  • Support for navigating disability services and other disability-related challenges Islamic perspectives on disability
  • Diverse stories about Muslims living with disability
  • Guidance for making Muslim communities more welcoming and inclusive for all

What Our Research Has Shown

EnabledMuslim listens to the voices that matter most in our work. Through an extensive needs assessment survey circulated in May 2014 and made up of 148 individuals with disabilities and their families, AMHP learned more about community-related concerns faced by many Muslims living with physical, intellectual, developmental, sensory, or psychological disabilities.

Survey respondents living with disabilities asked us to provide the following online resources:

1. A network to connect with other Muslims impacted by similar disability-related needs and challenges. The absence of such a network often leads to a feeling of isolation.

2. Diverse stories about Muslims living with disabilities. There are numerous Muslims living with disabilities who contribute to our Muslim communities and society at large, and such stories serve as important reminders of that.

3. Guidance on how to raise awareness about disability issues in Muslim families, communities, and settings. Muslims living with disabilities and their loved ones are often their own biggest advocates in their Muslim communities. They need tools to learn how to effectively create change in their communities so they receive the support and inclusivity they deserve.

Empowering Those Impacted by Disability

EnabledMuslim offers and will continue to develop the above resources to meet these needs and others. By providing this information in an accessible manner, EnabledMuslim seeks to empower those living with disabilities by providing them with the tools and connections they need to support themselves and one another.

We live that mission by welcoming a team of advisers, many of whom are directly impacted by disability. EnabledMuslim is a community-powered effort.

Our Work Emerged from a Decade of Activism

A 501c(3) organization, AMHP’s mission is to empower a diversity of Muslim health professionals to improve the health of Americans. Since its founding in 2004, it has always focused particularly on those who are most vulnerable due to economic circumstances, special needs, or cultural barriers.

AMHP launched EnabledMuslim in September 2014, with generous support from the EquallyAble Foundation and an anonymous donor. In the years prior to launch, AMHP has been involved in numerous disabilities issues in the Muslim community. In 2007, AMHP created The Disability Needs & Awareness Working Group, aimed at educating and empowering communities to serve and assist those with disabilities. Since 2010, it has served on the steering committee of the Interfaith Disability Advocacy Coalition, a diverse, nonpartisan coalition of religious and religiously affiliated organizations that speak out and take action on disability policy issues in the federal government.
