About NSLC:

The North Side Learning Center (NSLC) was established in 2009 to serve the significant and wide ranging needs of the refugee and immigrant population in and around Syracuse, NY.  After 10 years, it is one of the most trusted and lean running non-profits in Central New York.  We had planned a 10^th Year Anniversary Dinner this spring, but the COVID-19 pandemic made this impossible.  Instead, we are planning a virtual event for Saturday, May 16 at 6:00 and are requesting your sponsorship. Mission: 

While our mission is primarily family literacy and empowerment, we also serve the needs of the community in real time.  For example, as you can see in the video shot on Saturday, April 25, ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-AXB5BJMbo&t=12s) we quickly pivoted to establish a major food distribution program that is now in its sixth week of operation as people lost jobs and often have no transportation or means to get food for their families.  We have been providing rice, pasta, flour, sugar, oil, beans, potatoes, onions, apples, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and more in two-week supply boxes for families in need. We have provided over 63,000 meals and counting.

What We Are Doing:

We have also quickly established a network of volunteers from Syracuse University and elsewhere to tutor our students who are now all doing distance learning because of school closings due to NYS COVID-19 regulations.  English is often our students second, third or fourth language.  Our NSLC students are even more vulnerable to falling behind in their studies due to this barrier as well as often not having the support, and technology to connect.  We are providing technology, tutors and referrals for assistance with internet connections and so much more.
