Honoring the Life and Legacy of Officer Didarul Islam 🤍

‎إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّ إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ 

On Monday, July 28, 2025, Officer Didarul Islam - a devoted father, husband, son, public servant, and immigrant from Sylhet, Bangladesh - was tragically killed in a mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. He had been proudly serving with the NYPD since December 2021, stationed at the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, and was working a private security detail when the attack occurred.

Officer Islam, 36, leaves behind his pregnant wife, two young children, and his closely-knit family in the Bronx. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch hailed him as a hero, saying he “made the ultimate sacrifice” and embodied the spirit of a true‑blue New Yorker.

We join not only in mourning, but in celebration of a life defined by quiet courage, unwavering duty, and compassionate service. Officer Islam stood as: a man of integrity: deeply rooted in faith and community, a protector: responding even when off-duty to safeguard fellow New Yorkers, a devoted family man: loving husband, father of two, expecting their third child.

Undoubtedly, Officer Islam's faith inspired his choice to serve and protect people. The Quran says in 5:24 that “Whoever saves a life is as if he had saved all of humanity.” And the Prophet Muhammad emphasized the virtue of helping people and safeguarding their lives and property. He - peace be upon him - said: “The most beloved to God are those who benefit people most.” Officer Islam's career was undoubtedly dedicated to serving and protecting New Yorkers. 

Though he was taken far too soon, his legacy endures: serving others selflessly and standing strong for his adopted city when it counted most. Though his final act was not in uniform, Officer Islam’s entire life was dedicated to service. His bravery, integrity, and compassion left an indelible mark on those who knew him—and on the many he protected. He lived with intention. He died with honor.
