Fatima Hassuneh, passed away after a bus hit her while she was crossing the street on campus. Help us honor her beautiful legacy with 2 water wells in Africa!

On September 18th, 2017 . . .

Fatima Hassuneh, 18, was crossing the street at the intersection of University Boulevard and New York Street on Indiana University-Purdue University's campus around 1:30 p.m. when a public school bus attempting to make a left-hand turn struck her. Witnesses and IUPUI officials say Hassuneh had the right of way. She passed away before reaching the hospital.

Fatima, or Fatooma as she was known, was a pre-med student who aspired to become a doctor, according to a post by the IUPUI Muslim Student Association.

“[she] was known for her kind heart and sense of humor,” the Muslim Student Association wrote. “She was a gift among us and has returned to her Lord. She was very active in our community and would often lead interfaith events. May Allah allow her to continue to reap the benefits of those deeds.”

Continuing her Legacy

Fatooma was known by her family, friends, colleagues, and all who met her as someone who was sweet, caring, and loved to help people. At even a young age, she was active in her involvement and was always keen on making a difference in lives of others.

Her death was tragic but it was not without purpose. Fatooma touched many lives and we would like to continue to fulfill her legacy.  We will be building water wells in two villages in Rwanda, Africa in her name.

Building a Water Well in Rwanda, Africa

A Holistic Project - Water, Farm Animals & Food Cultivation:

The Rwanda: Turi Kumwe project is designed to bring all of us together in serving the people of the Bugesera District, Rwanda through the implementation of multiple rain-catchment water systems & a water well, provide farm animals i.e. goats, cows, chickens, and cultivate dozens of sustainable vegetable and fruit gardens. One project costs an average of $5,000 per village.

Scarcity of Water after Conflict

The 1994 genocide in Rwanda began in the Bugesera district. This left less than half of its population alive and in extreme poverty and socioeconomic turmoil. Many children in this region do not attend school due to the need to fetch water in such dire circumstances. The women are left either widowed or forced to be the head of the household, while the men venture out to find what little employment there is without the proper education or training skills.

As continue to exceed every goal we set, we will continue to push towards new goals until the end of the campaign. Thank you to everyone for your generosity and please keep the message spreading.

Wells4Fatooma Update - Zam Zam - Part I

Salaam to you all! I hope this email finds you in the best of health and Imaan. It has been quite a while since we have reached out to you all. We have been working diligently behind the scenes on completing and maintaining our projects implemented in honor of our dear sister, Fatima, Allah Yerhamo. Recently, we were able to physically visit Fatooma's water projects (for the second time) in Rwanda, Africa. It is safe to safe, that the villagers are extremely grateful and appreciative. The gardens and animals that were also donated by this campaign are thriving. We will attach multiple pictures and a video that is private to the public, but accessible to those with the link.

Also, we will attach photographs, in a separate email, of the finished water project in Gaza dedicated to Sister Fatooma. It was completed in March 2018 and has been fully functional since then. Unfortunately, with the volatile unrest in Gaza, it has been extremely difficult to receive updates, but we are grateful for the content that we have thus far. As always, we continue to make dua for Sister Fatooma, her family, and this community. We thank you for your trust and we welcome any questions and/or concerns. Please reach out to us directly at info@zamzamwater.org. Thank you!

Wells4Fatooma Project

Salaam Alaikum to all,

My name is Yusuf Nessary, founder and President of Zam Zam Water. I wanted to personally reach out to you all and thank you for your continued support and to recognize the success of such a personal and important campaign in honor of Sister Fatima Hassuneh, Allah Yerhamo. Through these projects, we not only wish to acknowledge her life and legacy, but her friends and family that have answered the call to provide her Saddaqa Jarriya in the hereafter, in the most honorable way.

I want to update all on exactly where the funds have gone and where they will be going, inshAllah. Please not that all details and actions have been approved by Fatima's closest family members.

We recently came back from our trip to Rwanda and the pictures below are from 2 water projects in 2 different villages; Ruhanga and Rwamacumu. The water projects were still in the constructive process, but it was a great opportunity to meet with the villagers and share the story fo Fatima and how her life has impacted theirs.

The 2nd phase of the project will be towards a water project in Gaza. To be exact: we will be manufacturing a water desalination system that will be built in Gaza, by Gazans, serving hundreds of boys and girls at a school. We expect that water system to be completed and fully functional by the end of December and installed just in time for school to begin in January 2018. Cost of water project: $16,000.00 USD. Picture below is an example of one our current water projects in Gaza:

The 3rd phase will be dedicated towards our Education is Life-Afghanistan project. We will build, cultivate, and farm a plot of land in honor of Fatima with the intention to raise crops, meat, and dairy products to serve daily lunches for our 2 operating orphan education centers in Kabul and Logar, Afghanistan, that serves over 450 orphaned boys and girls. The remaining amount of funds: $16,353.92 will go directly towards this investment into the sustainable access of nutritious food and milk for our orphan students. Expected completion: Spring 2018. Below is a photograph of site of our new school we built in Afghanistan and the plot of land associated to the project:

Again, we appreciate you all tremendously and hope that we can continue to be as transparent as possible with our efforts. If anyone has any questions pertaining to the project, the process, etc., you can reach me directly at info@zamzamwater.org. We will also go ahead and add everyone to our mailing list to receive periodic updates to the projects and their progress. Thank you all!

Sincerely,

Yusuf A. Nessary
