RIGHT DOWN THE STREET
Imagine how you would feel if you found out that just a block away there were people living in an unheated garage in sub-zero temperatures. Think about a woman who has to carry her severely disabled brother on her back because she does not have access to a wheelchair. And the man who was so disappointed that he has to survive on $500 per month, walking out of a Social Security office disillusioned without any information on how he can get healthcare coverage or other resources to survive.
These are some of the stories that we heard at a recent winter wear giveaway at Salaam Community Wellness Center back in December 2023,.This was right before the city of Chicago experienced one of its most brutal winter storms. This is why we decided to move forward with a plan to launch the “Peace of Mind” Health and Wellness Pop-up program. Although we had to shelve this idea last year due to financial and time constraints, it is even more imperative now than ever to bring it into fruition. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!
WHAT IS THIS PROGRAM AND HOW CAN IT HELP THIS PROBLEM?
The Salaam Community Wellness Center “Peace of Mind” Health and Wellness Pop-up program will be a monthly event which will offer health, wellness and social services primarily to low-income residents and asylum seekers in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. These events will be held at different locations throughout the community to ensure accessibility for residents with limited transportation and/or safety concerns.
Participants will be provided physical, mental health and substance use disorder screenings. In addition, attendees will receive case management assessments and have availability to a mini-resource "fair" providing information and access to health and social services. Participants will be offered alternative health and wellness sessions including deep breathing, meditation, yoga, music therapy and massage therapy. During each event, participants will have access to healthy food options some of which will be provided by local gardens. "Essential bags" will be distributed, containing items such as non-perishable foods and personal care items.
The goal of this much needed program is to provide essential resources to the community's most vulnerable residents. By providing them with such we hope that this will help bring about stability in their lives and the opportunity to focus on their physical and mental health. This is the basis for achieving a productive life.
HOW WILL YOUR DONATION HELP?
For every $100 donation, we can provide three “essential bags” to our neediest neighbors. Each bag will provide much needed “essential items” to 2-3 individuals.
