Each year during the Holy Month of Ramadan the National Center For Juvenile Justice Reform (NCJJR) works to support children who are currently in the custody of the Washington DC Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.
NCJJR works to provide advocacy and coordination for youth whose desire is to observe the sacred month of Ramadan while in custody. We assist the institution in making sure that a pre-Ramadan orientation is given to the staff as well as assistance in identifying young Muslims who are detained.
In cooperation with the institution, we ensure that the youth will have their morning meal and evening breaking of the fast at the appropriate times, encourage congregational prayers, attendance to Jummah and educational programing.
During the month, we bring in supporters to assist the educational programs, Friday prayers, and social activities. At the end of the month, we provide gifts for the children and a special celebration for Eid Al-Fitr within the institutions.
We estimate that there are approximately 80 young people who are being housed in two different government facilities. We are seeking your support for gift sponsorships, educational materials, and financial support.
