Community members partner with refugee students in this one-on-one mentorship program that nourishes academic, social, professional, and religious growth.

How Our Program Works:

We pair a refugee student with an MSA college student and community members to help them academically, socially, and religiously. Students are paired with an individual who will be their mentor for the duration of the school semester. During this time they tutor, educate, socialize, and take field trips with the refugee students.

Why your help matters:

The majority of refugees in the United States come from Muslim countries yet our local mosque doesn't have any kind of infrastructure in place to help integrate them into society. When refugee children arrive in the states, they face many issues transitioning into their new environment. This program is designed to guide and support underprivileged refugee youth in Michigan. We are taking a vulnerable child and empowering them so they learn the tools or resources necessary to navigate through the western culture as a Muslim in America.

The Halimah program is named after the Prophet Muhammed's (PBUH) foster mother, Halimah Al-Sa'dyiah (RA):

She was a poor wet nurse, it was common for families to send their children to be raised by the Bedouins. Halimah took in the Prophet PBUH (though he was an orphan) as an infant and raised him until he was 5 years old. With the Prophet in her home, their flock started producing milk in a time of famine. His presence brought many blessings to Halimah's family.

This program started in 2017 in the Greater Lansing Area, Lansing is known as a sanctuary city that accepts refugee families.

The majority of refugees in the area come from Muslim countries yet the local mosques do not have any kind of relationship to help them integrate into society. Michigan State University students noticed a gap in the community where Muslim refugee children were disconnected from the Muslim community. The college students partnered with the Greater Lansing Islamic Center to provide a mentorship program for refugee students.

The Halimah Project Inc. is a non-profit organization focused on the mentorship of refugee youth in the community.
