As COVID 19 ravages through communities around the world, it is easy to only think about the people on our doorstep. You could be forgiven for thinking this is only a first world problem, with people fighting over toilet paper, hand sanitizer and self-isolating at home on the sofa while watching TV. But it really isn’t. This is a plague that has the world in its grip, and it is much more devastating for vulnerable communities in some of the poorer parts of the world...areas where READ Foundation successfully operated before this crisis began.

I am hugely concerned about the welfare of the most vulnerable: the refugees in the camps, the orphans, the widows, the elderly that relied on our donations to survive. There are already reports of COVID-19 breaking out in camps in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Bangladesh and Pakistan - areas where READ Foundation is committed to making a difference, and already has teams in place. Thousands of beneficiaries depend on them. But they need our help. Sadly, because of this crisis, donations have plummeted, and innocent lives are being affected. Your Sadaqah or Zakat donation could be the intercession to save their lives.

If we don’t act now, the devastation could be catastrophic. They don’t have the luxury to distance themselves or self-isolate, they don’t have masks and gloves, they don’t have the ventilators if they get sick or the medical equipment to help treat the numbers of people that will be suffering. The camps and areas they live in are completely ill equipped to handle this.

But we as an ummah must come together and support one another. This is as much a test for us as it is for them. Let us please Allah and show them our care and concern. Together we can help and overcome this pandemic.
