Help Victims and Families of the Easter Sunday Bombings in Sri Lanka

April 21st - Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka witnessed one of the worst terrorist attacks in living memory in the country. With close to 750 victims (249 dead and 500 injured), including people of multiple ethnic and religious backgrounds and citizens of at least 8 countries, 8 bombs went off in a coordinated effort across churches and hotels across the island. The attacks were designed to not only inflict maximum damage on a day when churches would be the most crowded, but also to ignite inter-communal violence and garner maximum publicity.

We can not allow community cohesion to be broken as a result of this. As communities are hurting and need to be rebuilt, the least we can do is offer our support to those who have been hurt and need healing.

Resources:

The Funds

All fundraising proceeds will be distributed to the families directly via Muslim Aid USA, a registered 501(c)3 organization in the US with a local presence and country office in Sri Lanka. We welcome people of all faiths to show solidarity with the victims and encourage love, tolerance, and unity in the face of hate. No amount of money will bring back their loved ones, but we do hope to lessen their burden in some way.

Easter Sunday Bombing Victim Support - Local press coverage

Interim Update #2:

Our campaign to help the victims of the Sri Lanka Easter Sunday bombing was recently picked up by the premier business newspaper in the country - the Financial Times. The link is below:

http://www.ft.lk/news/Muslim-Aid-partners-with-Sri-Lanka-Red-Cross-Society-to-aid-Easter-Sunday-attack-victims/56-679917

The article describes some of the work our local field partner, Muslim Aid Sri Lanka, is now doing with the proceeds of this campaign together with the Sri Lanka Red Cross. We have targeted ~100 families for direct financial support, counseling, educational scholarships (for orphans), livelihood assistance, etc.

The situation in the country is still sensitive and getting pictures/videos has proven challenging. Our local field partner is working on interfaith activities to help counter some of the anti-Muslim sentiment on the ground as a part of this campaign. Thank you again for your support on this campaign.

Sri Lanka Easter Sunday Bombing Victim Support Campaign - Interim Update

We have raised $42,000 (almost 7.5 million rupees) to date and I wanted to convey my heartfelt gratitude for your support and trust.

Update on funds raised to-date from this campaign:

  • We have disbursed $38,000 to Muslim Aid Sri Lanka in order to collaborate with Sri Lanka Red Cross. They have already qualified 100 beneficiaries from the bombing victims, and intend to provide i) healthcare, medications, injury treatment, assistive devices (e.g. wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids), ii) trauma counseling, iii) scholarships for orphaned children, iv) vocational training, and v) livelihood support. This is in Colombo & Negombo.
  • We are currently conducting a needs assessment for the remaining $4000+. Our aspiration is to serve victims in the Batticoloa region, and we are in early talks with the Voice for Voiceless Foundation

Update on the situation in the country:

  • As it turned out, the perpetrators of these senseless attacks were ISIS affiliates. The local media have also been sharing evidence that various branches of the government and security apparatus were made aware of the impending attack but failed to act.
  • In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, a wave of anti-Muslim sentiment has swept through the country and Sinhala mobs have started to retaliate by attacking Muslim homes, businesses, and mosques throughout the country. One Muslim has died, countless are homeless and hungry (while fasting in Ramadan), and many have had their livelihood means destroyed.

In order to help these Sri Lankan Muslims rebuild from these acts of violence, we have created a new, separate campaign to help them. Please support & share:  https://www.launchgood.com/srilankanmuslims. Also note this is zakat-eligible.
