We're raising money to help cover security costs at the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh because our Muslim neighbors deserve to worship without fear.

Can we show that Pittsburgh is indeed Stronger Than Hate? We're raising money to cover security costs so that Muslims can worship without fear at the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh (ICP). Due to numerous hate-filled actions, ICP previously assembled a security committee to assess the needs and interests of the community to protect children and adults who regularly visit the Center to pray and participate in community events. Donations will cover everything from security cameras to adding guards during Jummah (Friday prayer) to trainings that will help identify and respond to safety concerns.

Following the Christchurch shooting on March 14th that left 50 people dead and more than 50 injured, Muslims around the world are afraid and on high alert. This terrorist attack was fueled by hate and ensuring the safety of our Muslim brothers and sisters is paramount.

In Pittsburgh, we have unified under the message that we are Stronger Than Hate following the Tree of Life shooting that left 11 Jewish community members dead on October 27, 2018. These attacks do not have to happen, we can do more to stop hate while simultaneously working to make sure our places of worship remain sacred and safe. Let’s come together as one – one world, one community, one family – to end Islamaphobia and Anti-Semitism and all hate, in any form it takes. Racism, prejudice, and bias against any of our neighbors is a threat to all of us.

There is a direct correlation between mosques that are threatened with mosques that are more vocal and visible in their communities. ICP is on the forefront in the fight for justice, especially within the past four years, which has mirrored a spike in white supremacy and anti-Muslim violence. Far-right white supremacist organizations have directly attacked ICP in their writings and calls for hate. For more on what this has looked like in Pittsburgh, see this write up or watch this video.

The congregations of Dor Hadash, New Light, and Tree of Life, alongside immigrant inclusion initiative, All for All, are fundraising for and with the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh to meet their security needs. Fundraising efforts are administered by All for All through its fiscal agent, The Global Switchboard. Muslims in Pittsburgh and across the country demonstrated the epitome of our shared humanity, as the city grieved, when our Jewish neighbors were attacked last year. We come together again, this time devastated by the lives lost at two mosques in Christchurch, because we believe that we all deserve to worship without fear.
