Since 2014, Sawa for Development & Aid has been operating a Ramadan Community Kitchen in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. The Kitchen prepares fresh Iftar meals served and delivered to refugees from Syria and other community members.

At the Service of Refugees from Syria

After nearly eight years of strife in their home country, 5.6 million people have fled Syria. Nearly a million refugees find themselves stranded in Lebanon. A large majority suffer from poverty and hardship. Sawa for Development & Aid has been a leader in the effort to support the Syrian refugee population in Lebanon.

For the fifth year in a row, Sawa will be employing members of the refugee community in its Ramadan Community Kitchen to cook fresh and nutritious Iftar meals prepared from scratch, which include juice, dates, salads, a main course, bread, pastries, and fruits. The Iftar meals are delivered to the Syrian population, who receive them with dignity in their host communities and refugee camps. Over the years Sawa has gradually increased the number of Iftar meals it prepares to 5,000 every day of Ramadan. That is 150,000 Iftar meals during the month!

Sawa funds its Ramadan Kitchen mainly through individual charitable donations and staffs it each day with a buzzing army of up to 100 cooks and helpers, including volunteers and members of the Syrian community. While the Syrian refugee community continues to face daily hardships, donor interest is waning. Your generosity and solidarity are urgently needed during the blessed month of Ramadan to sustain Sawa's extraordinary effort to host and support the many destitute members of the refugee community. Every dollar received by Sawa directly funds the preparation and distribution of Iftar meals.
