Feeling the cold? Rohingya refugees are still suffering.

Winters in the refugee camp of Bangladesh is harsh and many thousands of vulnerable refugees who have been forced from their country are now facing a winter of heavy cold and without even a proper roof over their heads.

The past few weeks Canadian Rohingya Development Initiative team in Bangladesh has been approaching the team in Canada with the winter blanket appeal. As the cold weather bites in Bangladesh, the Canadian Rohingya Development Initiative wants to reach out to everyone, seeking help for the helpless and unfortunate Rohingyas to keep Rohingya refugees a little warmer this winter.

Rohingya are a native ethnic minority from Arakan, the western part of Myanmar/Burma living there for centuries. They were forced to become stateless on their own ancestral land after 1982 so-called citizenship law. They have encountered many operations of dehumanization from various Burmese governments since 1962 till now. Rohingya have lost their dignity, nationality, home, land, property, history and faced various human right abuses such as restrictions on movement, education, religion, marriage, two child policy, economy, travel, arbitrary arrest, rape, etc. The greatest disaster is 2017 and the world have seen an unfolding genocide against Rohingyas. They are facing a slow burning genocide being from nowhere. More than 650,000 members of the Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh recently where they live in enclosed camps without proper help. According to MSF survey, at least 6,700 Rohingya were killed by Myanmar security forces. More than 60 percent village was uprooted.

  •  The camps are crowded, filled with people in need of food and shelter, says Ahmed Ullah.

Who Are We?

Canadian Rohingya Development Initiative (CRDI) is a registered non-profit organization established by the members of Rohingya community and works with prominent Canadians from different communities and organizations to advocate for the cause of Rohingya in Canada and abroad. We are registered as Not-for-profit under the registration number: 1019790-4.  We promote sustainable community development practices such as education, health-care, humanitarian aid, settlement services for newcomers and awareness campaigns.

  • While walking through a camp, Ahmed Ullah spotted a young girl, starving and sleeping on a mat outside.
