What's the situation?

You might have heard about what is happening to our Uyghur (pronounced “oi-ghoor”) brothers and sisters. If not, allow us to fill you in on the details. Uyghurs are a Muslim Turkic ethnic people, indigenous to the area given the colonial Chinese name of “Xinjiang” (meaning New Land) but commonly called East Turkestan by Uyghurs themselves.

Records show that Uyghurs were the first of the nomadic Turkic people to transition into an urban lifestyle, and have called this part of the world home for over 4000 years.

“Not just Muslim leaders but supporters of human rights everywhere ought to be outraged at China’s attempted extermination of an indigenous people’s culture and religion.” Washington Post

This is a summary of a fraction of what Uyghur people are facing today, all of which are verifiable by the resources provided:

  • Homes of Uyghur people being occupied by Chinese officials. That is, Uyghurs are forced to “welcome” Chinese officials into their homes to live with them. Photos of this are then being used as propaganda as a display of "integration".

  • Internment “re-education” camps where “saying, doing, or even thinking the wrong thing can get you locked up” with no trial. There are currently 800,000 to 2 million Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims being held at internment camps.

  • Torture is being used at these camps such as being clamped down in a ‘tiger chair,’ electrocution, teeth and nails being pulled out, sterilization, being beaten until dead, and more.

  • Cremation of the bodies of Uyghurs who die at these internment camps, denying their families a proper burial.

  • Thousands of young Uyghur women are being forced into marriage with Han Chinese men.

  • Uyghur children becoming orphaned with parents being taken away into internment camps for indefinite periods of time. Many of these children are taken to state-run orphanages where they are being taught/brainwashed into hating their religion and ethnic identity, and replacing it with speaking Chinese and adopting atheism. The parents of these children have no idea where they are.

  • Once majority Uyghur-populated cities being systematically settled with increasing numbers of Han Chinese people, who are now the majority of the population.

Sounds awful right? It is. We have family and friends who have been affected by and directly experienced many of the above. There isn’t a single Uyghur who doesn’t have at least one family member who is currently held at an internment camp.

“I can’t bear my mother and my wife being abused to death by the Chinese government. Just shoot them instead. I’ll pay for the bullet.” Abdurahman Hassan, via BBC.

What can you do?

  • Firstly, action: support our campaign by purchasing a shirt that celebrates atlas (a form of ikat) which is an Uyghur fabric traditionally handwoven on silk, with 100% of profits going to the World Uyghur Congress—a UN-recognised international not-for-profit organisation that works to advocate for the rights of Uyghur people through democratic and peaceful means. Visit here for more info: www.uyghurcongress.org/en/
  • Secondly, words: help us reach more people so they may learn about what is happening to our friends and family. Please copy and paste this link to share this campaign: bit.ly/uyghur-atlas-lg
  • Thirdly, prayers: whenever you remember, please make dua for us. Not just for the Uyghur people who are experiencing incredible injustice and oppression, but for all the oppressed indigenous peoples around the world.

“Not just Muslim leaders but supporters of human rights everywhere ought to be outraged at China’s attempted extermination of an indigenous people’s culture and religion.” - Washington Post

About the shirt:

Designed by our team and printed in Australia on shirts ethically made in Bangladesh. The fabric is a soft and stretchy combed cotton that comes in black, for both men and women.

The shirt features Uyghur atlas (which is a form of ikat), a traditionally handwoven pattern on silk. Atlas is worn by Uyghur men and women and embodies their wisdom, civilisation and history; a connection to their vibrant past and hope for a bright future.

When will I receive my shirt?

We're aiming to get our shirts delivered within 1-2 months after our campaign ends. The wait time will depend on where you're located.

Our shirts have already been printed, so they're all ready and waiting to be delivered to their new home :)

About us:

We’re a team of friends from Australia who have grown up hearing stories of the atrocities our Uyghur family & friends have been through.

With the continued human rights violations against Uyghurs, more people have been asking “what can we do to help?” This motivated us to provide a practical course of action: starting a social venture to sustainably raise funds for the World Uyghur Congress.

Our intention was to contribute to spreading more awareness on the political realities of the Uyghur situation, but to also share an important part of Uyghur culture with all of you - the atlas pattern.

Where does the money go?

All profits go to the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) which is a UN-backed and trusted organisation.

Through their tireless research and advocacy work, the WUC is responsible for the Uyghur situation being discussed at federal levels of government in various European states, raising awareness within the UN and sparking the recent wave of media coverage, validating the reports of human rights abuses against Uyghurs coming out from China, and more.

Resources:

While the difficulties of the Uyghur people have been ongoing since earliest memory, recently there has been an increase in coverage of the situation. All of the following links support the summary of the situation we outlined above.

A little extra for our Power Givers:

We will be giving free digital downloads of original hand-lettered art, exclusively available for our power givers only.

With Peace,

The Uyghur Atlas team

Updates 1

Intezar Elham5 years ago

THANK YOU! Updates, and AJ+

Salam & hi!

With our Uyghur Atlas campaign officially at a close, we wanted to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you for your support. It's because of you that we smashed our initial target of $5,000.

We are so grateful to every single one of you who shared our campaign, purchased a shirt, and made a donation.

At this point, we're knee-deep in processing the purchases, and given the overwhelming response, we've had to put in an order to get even more shirts manufactured than we'd anticipated. So we're working hard on getting everything ready to send out progressively :)

One of the most unexpected highlights for our team was our campaign being featured on AJ+, how crazy is that! Click here to check out the video.

We'll keep you updated on how things progress on our end, and we can't wait to see you in your shirts! When you receive it, we'd love for you to share a photo on any social media platform of your choice, with #UyghurAtlas.

See you soon ;)

With peace,
Intezar, Subhi, and Turgut
