Provide university students with spiritual and mental health care inspired by prophetic teachings in holistic and inclusive campus communities.

We need your help urgently to maintain our services and programs. Please consider helping us during this crucial time. You can make a difference in the lives of hundreds of students in Canada. Perhaps even save a life.

The Problem

The university environment can be a very difficult transition for students, including Muslims.

Many suffer from anxiety, stress, loneliness, depression, and some even have suicidal thoughts. Many people struggle emotionally and spiritually. According to a recent CBC article, 44% of students reported that at some point during their university experience they felt so depressed that they thought it was extremely hard for them to function and to study. According to another study, 1 out of every 4 Canadians is expected to experience a mental challenge during their lifetime, and most of these mental challenges occur from the age of 17 till 24. The university experience without the proper support and help can be an extremely difficult one for students.

The Solution

And that's where the Muslim Chaplaincy comes in. The Muslim Chaplaincy offers dedicated spiritual guidance, support, counseling, in addition to educational services, to help the students navigate the university experience.

Distant from many mosques and many community centers, Muslim students sometimes have no one to ask for help when they need it, and that's where our chaplains are on the ground offering them the support and the help they need. Just in one semester, our three chaplains can offer more than 250 confidential one on one sessions with students.

The work of our chaplains is not just limited to counseling sessions, our chaplains help to build a healthy community that's built with love and compassion. On a weekly basis, our chaplains offer classes and discussion circles that act as a safe space for students to come together, share their experiences, and connect with one another.

There are over 10,000 students across the four campuses where we offer our services. University of Toronto San George, Mississauga, Scarborough, and Ryerson University. There's a lot of the Muslim Chaplaincy to do, and that's why we need your support.

A Message

"We at the Muslim Chaplaincy have been doing our best to provide quality religious and spiritual services both at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University."

Help keep the Chaplaincy doors open and the important work of our Chaplains sustainable by donating now to our campaign.

What do Muslim Chaplains do?

  • Provide free one on one counseling sessions to students where they are able to ask their questions and receive necessary spiritual and mental care
  • Host unique Islamic programming on each campus that brings the community together and provides a safe space for students to learn and discuss
  • Talk to Muslim and non-Muslim students alike who would like to begin, return to or continue their journey of growing spiritually and learn more about the Deen.
  • Give podcasts of spiritual refinement. Embark on the journey within.

How does counseling work?

Each session varies in approach depending on the individual, and all sessions are kept confidential. Everyone is welcome at the Muslim Chaplaincy, and we will do our best to be of service to the students. If a matter is beyond the scope of faith-based counseling, we refer the students to the best and most appropriate avenues for help and assistance.

How will your donations be used?

The generosity of supporters such as yourself is crucial to our ability to meet our needs. One of the donations will fulfill our immediate goal, while ongoing monthly support is crucial to our long term sustainability.

The donations will be used to:

  • Allow for our continued services
  • Fill the currently vacant administrative positions at the Muslim Chaplaincy.
  • Allow for our chaplains to continue to provide the necessary and free counseling sessions that they do.
  • Facilitate the expansion of current community programming on campuses so that students can continue to ask their questions and learn more about the Deen
  • Making us able to expand our Chaplains roles to full-time positions for additional counseling hours.

What do people say about us?

Here are some testimonials about The Muslim Chaplaincy of Toronto.

Dr. Ingrid Mattson

Professor of Theology | Western University

"Any reasonable person who is concerned about the future of Islam in Canada surely understands that a significant increase in responsible and culturally aware religious leaders, role models and mentors in our communities is critical. The Muslim Chaplaincy at the University of Toronto exemplifies the kind of responsive leadership and relevant services desperately needed. Thousands of young people who might otherwise be lost to religious indifference, alienation or even extremism are being served by this program which deserves our utmost support."

Imam Omer Bajwa

Coordinator of Muslim Life at Yale University

"The Muslim Chaplaincy at the University of Toronto strives to offer holistic, inclusive and meaningful experiences of religious learning, practice and engagement. I am continually impressed with their efforts; the more I observe their program, the more I hope and pray for their program to flourish and be emulated by other campuses."

Sarah Rostom

Student | UofT Faculty of Law

"I have found the Muslim Chaplaincy’s counseling services to be a safe space for students to discuss our issues and struggles with a chaplain who understands our unique challenges as Muslim university students. Amjad is an empathetic, insightful and thoughtful counsellor who brings his understanding of both the Islamic sciences and mental health and wellbeing to the guidance he provides. It genuinely brings me comfort knowing that Amjad is available to speak and is around campus if I find myself in need receiving good advice. Perhaps the best testimonial I can provide is I have encouraged friends and acquaintances, Muslim and otherwise, to speak with Amjad if they are in need of counselling. Alhamdulillah for the Chaplaincy!"

Reema Mobeireek

Psychology Student | UofT Mississauga

"Like many other Muslims, I often struggle to reconcile between conflicting forces in my life. As students still in our formative years, we are learning just as much about the world and ourselves as we are about our respective fields. The Muslim Chaplaincy has helped to bridge the gap between foundational Islamic knowledge and today's university student. Upon discovering it, I found a space where I can connect with and learn from others regarding how to engage many relevant and intersectional issues. Ustadh Amjad Tarsin has inspired me through both guidance and example, all in a way that reflects prophetic character. Being the new generation, we are taking on important responsibilities. We desperately need the support to carry our great community forward, and the MC plays a crucial role in providing it."
