Support the victims and families of shootings in 2 mosques in New Zealand

HUMANITY UNITES for CHRISTCHURCH

  • UPDATE 1 (March 16, 2019): In only 1 hour, this campaign hit its initial goal to raise $10,000 NZD for the victims' families. In only 7 hours, we had reached $100,000 NZD - 10 times the original goal. We raised the goal 20 times as the campaign went viral worldwide. After only 20 hours, this campaign has reached $1 million NZD!
  • UPDATE 2 (March 17, 2019): We are overwhelmed with emotions at the global response to this campaign. Today, only 48 hours later, the campaign surpassed $1.5 million NZD ($1 million USD). This campaign has now become the largest LaunchGood campaign ever, even in such heartbreaking circumstances. The global response shows the power of love over hate. Over 30,000 people have donated from 123 countries and at least half of the donors are not Muslim. This interfaith response - from all walks of life - is truly inspiring and healing for the world.
  • UPDATE 3 (March 19, 2019):  The campaign has reached $2.2 million NZD ($1.5M USD) in only 100 hours. There are nearly 40,000 donors from 125 countries. We have raised the goal again - for the 25th time.
  • UPDATE 4 (March 26, 2019): We have adjusted the end date of the campaign to be Friday, March 29. This enables us to conclude the fundraising and expedite disbursement of funds to victims' families.

50 killed, 34 injured at 2 New Zealand Mosques

50 innocent men, women, and children lost their lives and 34 more were injured when a terrorist opened fire at 2 mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand (Masjid Al Noor and Linwood Masjid). The attacks occurred during Friday prayers - the Muslim day of congregation and community-building. We welcome people of all faiths to show solidarity with the victims and encourage love, tolerance, and unity in the face of hate.

Resources

The Funds

All fundraising proceeds will be distributed to the families by NZIIC - New Zealand Islamic Information Centre, directed toward the immediate and long-term needs of the grieving families. No amount of money will bring back their loved ones, but we do hope to lessen their burden in some way.

Worldwide Outpouring of Support

New Zealanders have rallied to offer support and sympathies for the victims, leaving flowers and messages near Al Noor mosque. Worldwide, people of all faiths have reached out to their local Muslim communities with kind messages, interfaith solidarity events, and vigils.

We have begun compiling a list of all these events and gestures of support; view it here. To add your event's album or news article, please email info@celebratemercy.com with event details, links, and a brief description.

Grief Support Tool-Kit

Included are resources to help those in the midst of grief. It’s hard to know where to turn to for help, but it’s important to know that there are support and resources available.

The Victims - Our Martyrs

Know who our martyrs are so we can honour their legacies. Click the collage below to learn more about them at KnowTheirName.com NZ Herald also has published this piece with many biographical profiles; the LaunchGood Instagram page is also a great resource.

Note: The focus should not ever be on the terrorist but on these beautiful souls. Their stories deserve to be told. They should never be known as just victims of a terrorist shooting, but the real lives of Muslims who went to worship God on a blessed Friday in the blessed month of Rajab, and who returned to Him as martyrs. Share their stories and help their legacies live on. ❤

Distribution of Funds - Christchurch Mosque Launchgood Campaign

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which growsseven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing” Quran (2:261)

Press Statement on the Distribution of money to those affected by the attacks in Christchurch

Firstly, we would like to thank everyone who donated to the fundraising campaign organised by At Taqwa Trust in association with the New Zealand Islamic Information Centre. The generosity was overwhelming, and the total amount of money raised via multiple platforms was NZ$2,822,753.48. Secondly, we would like to thank Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the New Zealand government for acting promptly and assisting those affected by the tragedy.

We would also like to thank the Department of Internal Affairs, Victim Support group and other Muslim organizations (Al-Manar Trust, Muslim Associations of Canterbury, North Shore Islamic Association, Handshake People, FIANZ) who worked together with us to help administer the funds raised. After much deliberation, it was agreed that Victim Support group would distribute the funds on behalf of us, since they are already working closely with the Christchurch victims. The funds collected by us will be given to the families of the 51 people who died and to 78 individuals who were injured in the shootings.

We have already distributed NZ$150,000 prior to the 13th May and a further NZ$2,410,107 during the month of Ramadhan (before the end of May). We will have just under 10% of the fund (NZ$262,646.48) on hold for one month. This is in order to be able to assist if there are any new needs that arise. If no new needs arise after a month, the balance of the fund will be distributed to the victims.

We would like to specifically thank our Local Publicity Partners on the Launchgood campaign:

    1. Handshake People

    2. AUT Muslim Student Association

    3. Kuk Sool Won of Pukekohe & Onewhero (Korean Traditional Martial Art)

    4. The South East Radio Network (V3 FM radio, Pukekohe)

    5. Al Ameen Islamic Development, Wellington

    6. Al Manar Relief

    7. Dar Al Quran, Auckland

    8. Taranaki Retreat

    9. North Shore Islamic Assocation

    10. Queenstown Islamic Centre

    11. New Zealand Muslim Association

    12. Home Kitchen, Hamilton (www.homekitchen.co.nz)

    13. Auckland Chinese Community Centre

We are grateful to have received support from numerous organizations all over the world. The launchgood campaign was promoted by CNN, PBS, Huffington Post, Al Jazeera and on twitter by Jack Dorsey (Twitter CEO). Details are available on www.launchgood.com/Christchurch. Thanks to all their efforts we were able to raise significant funds for the Christchurch victims.

Update at the end of Friday, March 15

Police continue to deal with what is an unprecedented event for New Zealand. The loss of life and the number of those who have been injured is tragic.

As the Prime Minister has stated, this has been designated a terrorist attack.

We now know that 49 people have been killed in the attacks, 41 people at the Deans Avenue mosque, and seven at the Linwood Avenue mosque. One person died in hospital.

The number of those being treated in hospital has been updated to 48 people.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder and is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow morning.

Two others remain in custody. Another person was arrested earlier today however that was not related to these events.

This is still an ongoing situation and Police has a significant number of staff on the ground in Christchurch.

There are community events planned across the country this weekend and there will be a visible Police presence at these events for safety and reassurance.

Police wish to notify the public of the Restoring Family Links (RFL) website (link is external) where people can register missing persons or register themselves as alive. People living in New Zealand can also register missing persons on 0800 115 019.

Our thoughts remain with all of those affected.
