The outpouring of support for this campaign has been overwhelming. Your generosity and response allowed Ihsan Foundation to immediately tend to the needs of survivors of this disaster. As the government of Sierra Leone, international nongovernmental organizations, and the people of Sierra Leone continue to sort through this tragedy, Ihsan Foundation is looking to the ongoing and long term needs of survivors.
Ihsan in Action & Your Donations at Work
As news broke of the disaster, Ihsan Foundation’s team in Sierra Leone were on-site consoling survivors and assessing their emergency needs. Blankets, used clothing, cash and food were immediately distributed by the Ihsan team. In the weeks after the disaster, Ihsan, with the help of international partners, was able to distribute hundreds of mattresses, clothing, household goods, and food to survivors who are now living in makeshift and temporary housing situations.
CNN reports that close to 20,000 people, 5,000 of them children, have been displaced by the flooding and rains. As the rain continues, and survivors remain in temporary living situations, there are fears that cholera and malaria will overwhelm this already very vulnerable population. The government of Sierra Leone continues its efforts to account for those still missing and to craft a plan to move forward for survivors.
Often in disasters, it is women and children who feel the effects most acutely. Data is forthcoming, but it is estimated that there are significant numbers of children and widows who will need support in the coming months and years. The new school year starts mid-September. For children orphaned or displaced by the mudslide, immediate action must be taken to ensure these children are able to begin the school year with proper supplies, uniforms and their school fees covered. $20 per month sponsors the education of a child in Sierra Leone. For widows who lost their husbands in the disaster, there is an ongoing need to ensure safe shelter and opportunities for the women to become self-supporting.
In 2014, Ihsan Foundation responded to the Ebola Disease outbreak by providing life-saving educational programs and care for children. Ihsan continues to support 30 children who were orphaned due to Ebola. Stories of children orphaned by the mudslide are starting to emerge. Read the story of Isaak and Idris, who lost both parents in the mudslide.http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2017/09/orphaned-mudslide-sierra-leone-freetown-170905123116412.html
Ihsan plans to support children orphaned by the mudslide. This support includes providing safe shelter, food, education and healthcare. Ongoing orphan sponsorship of $50.00 per month can cover these costs, as well as one time donations that can go toward expanding existing or building new orphanages. Widows can be supported through micro-lending programs to encourage entrepreneurship and the learning of new trades or skills. These costs vary depending on the type of skills being sought, or the type of small business.
Ihsan is also exploring ways to provide temporary housing for survivors. This housing might be in the form of a rented space or structures that could be built within a month and that would be semi-permanent as more long-term options materialize. We will continue to provide updates. Please keep survivors of this disaster in your thoughts and duas, and share this campaign with you friends, families, and communities.

Residents of the Regent District of Freetown Sierra Leone woke up on Monday, August 14, 2017 to the specter of a natural disaster that has not been witnessed in recent history. A mudslide had buried entire areas of the neighborhood. Torrential rain floods in the area and elsewhere had carried off many houses, destroying human lives and property.
Much of the world sat by and watched without doing much to help the thousands of people affected by this natural disaster. We humbly ask you to empathize with the people and families of Freetown and donate generously so that we can help them recover from this tragedy!

Massive damage in the aftermath of a deadly mudslide in Freetown
The search for hundreds of missing people continues as many survivors are losing hope of finding their relatives. Rescue workers have spent days digging through the dirt trying to recover the remains of those missing, while the telling stench of decomposing bodies fills the air. The morgues are overwhelmed and mass burials were held this past week - this gave survivors very little time to cope with the extent of the tragedy and to mourn their loved ones.
Residents take on the heart-wrenching task of digging mass graves
In the days after the disaster, Ihsan's team was on the ground consoling victims and providing immediate relief in terms of blankets, food and any other available support we could offer.
Aisha, a woman we met while visiting Freetown, lost her husband in the mudslide. The following link is a recording of the Ihsan team speaking with Aisha in the hours after the disaster. https://vimeo.com/231004770
While visiting the area, our team has spoken to many survivors in order to assess the current and most urgent needs of the people. The following is a list of the most identified needs of the people:
Crowded conditions as the government works to identify those dead and missing
Many survivors are now crammed into makeshift shelters as the government of Sierra Leone works to document those who are missing, dead, and all of the survivors.
Official government relief efforts are in the works, but in the meantime, what is known for sure is that there are hundreds of widow/widowers and orphaned children who will continue to need care and assistance in the coming months.

Thanks for your support! We've reached our goal! The work continues!
Dear Friends of Ihsan –
Assalamualaikum and Eid Mubarak! Your outpouring of support for the people of Sierra Leone has been tremendous. We quickly met our first and second funding goals.
Thanks to your generosity and prayers, Ihsan’s team in Sierra Leone was able to hold a major distribution of much-needed household items, clothing, and food on August 29th.
May Allah reward you greatly for responding and donating to those in need!
Ihsan Foundation responds to emergencies, but most of our work is ongoing. We are now moving to the next steps of supporting those affected by the mudslide and flooding disaster. Just as in 2014, when Ebola ravaged Sierra Leone, leaving orphans and fragmented families in need of support for the years to come, the survivors of the mudslide will need ongoing support. Ihsan Foundation continues to support children who were orphaned by Ebola, and now plans to support children and widows/widowers who have survived the mudslide.
These costs are ongoing, so we now have an open goal. Any funds donated above the $30,000 already raised, will go to providing longer term care for mudslide survivors. Just to give you an idea of the costs involved:
School will be starting soon for children in Sierra Leone. Supplies, uniforms, and school fees will be challenging for those displaced by the disaster. Please consider donating towards the education of a child, or sponsoring an orphan.
The rainy season continues with bleak weather prediction - with many fearing that they have not yet seen the worst. Donate to provide shelter to a family among the 20,000 displaced persons.
We thank you for supporting the work of Ihsan Foundation and helping the survivors of this disaster in Sierra Leone. May Allah continue to bless you!
