Provide a Syrian refugee in Jordan with a full scholarship to access higher education

Education is Hope for Syria's Youth

Last year, the Wesleyan Refugee Project (WRP) and LaunchGood raised over $16,000 for a full scholarship to send two Syrian refugee students from Za'atari camp to Zarqa University in Jordan through the Jusoor-Amal Scholarship Fund. This year, we hope to send another student to college with your help!  $4,000 covers the expenses for one year of university – which includes registration, tuition, school supplies, textbooks, transportation, and a living stipend.

Last Year's Scholarship Recipients

“When you’re forced to flee, it’s so painful. I can’t express the words of how much it hurts to leave your home. Home means so much. It was all taken from us" (Nawar, quoted from UNHCR Jordan)

In spite of everything she has lost, Nawar is an active member within her community. In Za'atari Refugee Camp, she is a coach for UNHCR Jordan's TIGER program, mentoring young Syrian girls. She also works hard to provide psycho-social support for children within the camp.

The video featured above shows Nawar in the TIGER Girls program.

Yasin recently received an award from the President of Zarqa University, Dr. Mahmoud Al Wadi, for placing first in his major --Management Information Sciences. Among one of the many volunteer organizations Yasin is involved with is "We love Reading", a non-profit that teaches young adults to be storytellers for children at Za'atari. Yasin was presented an award for reading stories to the largest number of children at Za'atari Refugee Camp. Read more about Yasin and The Amal Foundation in this article that was just released on May 16, 2017 (How These 20-Somethings Started an NGO and Brought New Hope to Syrian Refugees).
Yasin and Nawar also volunteer with FPSC in the camp-- an organization that focuses on youth with special needs.
As outstanding leaders and exemplar students who are heavily involved in community service, both Nawar and Yasin serve as role models for the youth in Za'atari Camp. We hope to send more students like them to college!

A Full College Scholarship for a Syrian Refugee

In the process of selecting our sponsored students, the Amal Foundation met countless inspiring Syrian youth who, in the hardest of circumstances, are working to improve the lives of those around them. They seek higher education in order to better serve their community today and rebuild Syria in the future.

The Syrian students are currently partnered with the Wesleyan Refugee Project and the larger Wesleyan community through a virtual cultural exchange. This partnership has increased intercultural understanding by building a bridge between American university students and Syrian refugees. The students have access to other educational resources, such as mentoring and academic tutoring, through the Amal Foundation’s student support program.

(Here is Cole Phillips--one of the founders of the Wesleyan Refugee Project, with Yasin and Nawar)

Cole is a student mentor, providing logistical support to the students, such as the registration process. He also tutors Nawar in English since she is studying English Language at Zarqa University. As both a recent college graduate and someone who is currently nearby to the students, Cole acts as a resource to help and advise Nawar and Yasin if any issues arise.

Help us reach 100% of our campaign (only $500 away)

Salam everyone!

During these 10 blessed days of Dhul Hijjah, I pray that Allah grants you all that you wish for and so much more (an infinite amount of happiness, good health, longevity, and success for you and your loved ones). Again, the generosity you have shown Syrian refugees to attain higher education cannot be repaid by my words alone, so I genuinely pray for all of your wellbeings. Thank you.

As you pray for your family and friends, please also pray for all those who are suffering around the world--including the millions of refugees and displaced persons across the globe. And of course, tell everyone you know that this campaign is 98% to its goal and with a little push, we will fulfill the prayers of a Syrian refugee youth.

Wishing you and your loved ones Hajj Mubarak,

Sarah Rahman

Read an article published today about The Amal Foundation and Yasin, one of last year's scholarship recipients

Salam everyone!

Read this article published today about The Amal Foundation and one of Wesleyan Refugee Project's sponsored students, Yasin, who received the Amal-Jusoor scholarship last year.

Link to the article here! https://www.popsugar.com/news/How-Help-Syrian-Refugees-43501577

Read Yasin's story and experience, even if remotely, the journey he's been on--from when the war broke out in Syria to when he arrived at Za'atari Refugee Camp in Jordan, and finally, his current experiences in Zarqa University. Also read about the amazing volunteer work he is currently involved in. Yasin states that he would "work hard to be among those reconstructing Syria for the future, so that [the children of Syria] can live happy lives."
Also read about The Amal Foundation's efforts in building cultural exchange between American and Syrian students, and the organization's goal to humanize refugee aid. As Julie Whittaker, one of the founders of the Amal Foundation, states "The numbers can be overwhelming and numbing. So it's important to remind yourself that these are real people, just like you and me".

And lastly, please donate to this LaunchGood campaign (LaunchGood.com/SponsoraRefugeeStudent) so we can send more wonderful refugee students like Yasin to College!

Thank you,

Sarah Rahman
