For our Ramadan Kitchen this year, we selected the most vulnerable & neglected area in all of Lebanon. Together, we can warm thousands of hearts & tummies.

“The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful then a thousand heads bowing in prayer.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

Salam means peace & Ramadan is Peace.

This year, we want to make the best of Ramadan, to build bridges between people from all around the world, join us!

We believe that every month, every day and every minute should be filled with love & kindness. Why not start with Ramadan? This holy month of forgiveness and giving!

Şhams Network (Pronounced Shams -Sun in Arabic) is a social enterprise that independently generates revenue, to support programs which create positive social impact, build community wealth & directly improve the job skills of people facing barriers to personal developmentThrough mentorship and empowerment, we aim at building a network of local communities, that combines economic activity with social benefit, and is led by dynamic social entrepreneurs, wherever we may find them. During the month of Ramadan of 2017, the Shams team organized and carried out a Soup Kitchen which produced and distributed about 800/1000 meals per day, in the urban refugee camps of Sabra&Shatila, at the heart of Beirut, where around 40,000 people live far below the poverty line, in a 1Km2 area.

This year, we will be doing the same thing, but in a remote village called Al-Faour, on the far eastern side of the Beqaa Valley. Why? Because it is forgotten and abandoned, the most marginalized area in lebanon.

With an original population of around 25,000 Lebanese and Palestinian people, most of whom are unemployed and living on less than a dollar a day (some entire families live on 5$ a day), one can safely say that the town was in a very bad spot, even before the influx of Syrian refugees, which added about 3,500 people to the town, in the form of 9 small camps scattered on the outskirts of the village.

An Eco-friendly Month!

Every year, many similar Soup Kitchens end up wasting a lot of food, disposing of absurd amounts of plastic and unfortunately, animal abuse increases and goes from sacrifice, to mass killing. Which is oxymoronic to the essence and core values of the month of Ramadan.

Our Ramadan kitchen menu will be mainly plant-based, with a bare-minimum use of plastic, a proper management/disposal and recycling system for our solid waste; as well as constructive para-activities such as planting trees and other various plants between the refugee camps of Al-Faour, in an attempt to counter the inevitable degradation of the area’s flora. While our kitchen is running, we will be planting a piece of land, in the middle of 9 refugee camps. This land will include a small public park and a farming area, providing free plant-based food for the residents.

Thank You For Being Human.

                What an experience!

          Thank you kind supporters

This Ramadan Kitchen was about family. Why? because the most valuable thing we gained from this experience are the spiritual ties which which arose amongst the team members. We had Lebanese, Syrians, Palestinians, Brazilians, Canadians, Swiss, Italians, Muslims, Christians, Sunnis and Shias working together under the same refugee tent at the Salam Ramadan kitchen. It was not about charity, it is about community. We received fantastic feedback from the community on the food and service. Our head chef was a Syrian refugee mother named Halabiya, she and her family were running the kitchen with us!

Unlike many others, we chose not to humiliate the families and avoided taking photos of people receiving aid. Many of the families appreciated this gesture so much and ended up volunteering with us. Goal:Achieved. We did not just feed stomachs, we fed hearts and minds.

Here are a few updates:

  • Al Hurra TV covered one full day at the Salam Ramadan Kitchen

  • This is an example of one Iftar Meal. We alternated between vegetarian and meat-based meals. We always included Dates enough for the entire family. We included Arabic sweets for desert, fruits and a beverage.

  • Shiekh Munir Chisti from Oxford, UK visited our kitchen and volunteered with us.

  • We also put together a Ramadan food basket for vulnerable families all around lebanon, specifically widows with orphans.

  • Some heartwarming moments...
