Today, July 12, we heard the tragic news about our dear sister and MuslimFest Host, Sister Hodan Nalayeh of Integration TV.
It is with great difficulty and remorse that we learned Hodan Nalayeh was taken from us in an attack at the Al-Shabaab complex in Kismayo, Somalia. We were deeply saddened to hear her husband, Farid Jama Suleiman, also was killed.
Hodan will be remembered as an inspirational and enthusiastic story-teller who shared her love and experiences with art, culture, and life for us all to enjoy. She was passionate about showing the world the beauty of the history and people of Somalia through the stories she cultivated and through the power of social media. She was known for the incredible coverage she provided through Integration TV on the life of Somalis living in diaspora and was also a humanitarian.
Our journey with Hodan began at MuslimFest 2015, where we were able to learn from her and connect better with the Somali-Canadian community across the GTA through Integration TV. She was a powerful presence when she hosted our main stage programming, bringing representation to the stage as the intelligent, kind, vibrant Somali-Canadian woman that she was. We all looked forward to having her at MuslimFest 2019 and will deeply miss her presence.
We are in touch with Sr. Hodan's immediate family and will be connecting with them to discuss what they would like done with the funds (whether to use for support for Sr. Hodan's two children, who are now orphaned, or towards another initiative/charity that supports Somali youth). 100% of the funds received will be dispersed after consulting with her family. Understandably, they need time to grieve, and we will be posting updates on this page and sending out communication to all donors once all the options are discussed and a decision for fund use is decided.
We will forever cherish the memories of her positive energy and warm smile and ask everyone to keep her and her family in your prayers. May Allah SWT grant them His mercy and bless their souls with the highest ranks of Jannah. May He bring ease and peace to their family, ameen. Inna lillahi wa inna illahi raji'oon.#PrayForHodan

Honouring Hodan Nalayeh: Tribute at MuslimFest 2019
Hello and peace and blessing be upon you all!
For all those that donated to Sr. Hodan Nalayeh's legacy fund, we sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and kindness. We are in touch with Hodan's sister and family and will be giving 100% of the funds to them to help with the costs with raising Hodan's now-orphaned children.
In this tragedy, it was beautiful to read and see the words of remembrance as the many people whose lives Hodan touched, spoke out about their experiences with her and how far her impact and work reached. Here at MuslimFest, our volunteers, youth and artists share the same sentiment.
