About Our Mosque

Shahjalal Masjid was formed and donated back in 1987, the Masjid initially a porta-cabin was donated by the local authorities whom the local community requested; the first communal mosque in Poplar, London.

Initially the authorities donated 1 porter cabin which catered for 30 – 40 worshippers. Over the years it grew to several porta-cabins (local community fund raised to purchase additional cabins) as the Muslim community of Poplar and surrounding area grew. 

As the porta-cabin started delipitating and eroding away there became a need to develop the mosque into a purpose built structure. We first had to purchase the land from the local authority on a 100 year lease bases (open lease).

In 2012 the local community took the initiative the develop the masjid. Alhamduillah by end of 2014 sufficient amount of money was raised (with your help) to start the building work. By early 2016 the structural building was built - in the same land went up to two floors now; in order to accommodate the rising service users and the activities we do.

Our Services

Daily Prayers

Provide 5 daily prayers to the local community. The masjid caters for around 400 people during Jummah prayers and Taraweeh in Ramadhan. In normal prayers around 50-60 make use of the facility.

Childrens Maktab

Over 200 students from the local community and wider area benefit from learning Islamic Studies, Qāʿidah/Qurʾān, Memorisation (of key duʿās and sūrahs), Fiqh, Hadiths and Quranic Arabic.

We also provide weekend supplementary session covering the national curriculum and GCSE subject.

Both taught by highly qualified teachers in their respective fields. In additional to education service students enjoys enrichment sessions from summer day trips to local events participation.

Community Outreach

The centre provide so many different community outreach projects through out the year, from providing meals to homeless people, gang conflict resolution, employment workshop to advice and guidance sessions.

Over this Covid-19 period we have provided food packages to over 500 households throughout Tower Hamlets, London

Why do we urgently need funds?

The masjid has been serving the local community for over 3 decades now, bringing all people of faith, race and colour together. Its ore of a community hub rather than masjid.

With the Covid-19 situation, our income has completely gone to Null even though we are still serving the community. One average our gross monthly outgoing is around £2,500 – electricity / gas / telecom bills adds up to something like £700 then staff salaries and all other necessities we need to run the centre.

We started providing regular food supplies with these in the locality who are classifieds vulnerable as well as operate the masjid for other community need. 

With the development of the structural phase of the masjid, the funds we had in our account was dried up and now with this situation the very small savings we had has also dried up. Volunteers are helping out at what ever capacity they can, but in order to keep the few service we still have going. we need urgent financial support to fund these services.

Hence we are reaching out to the community and the wider audience to help us provide these valuables service to the community who are dearly affected by this sporadic virus
