Clean Water for everyone

Be a part of the solution by providing clean drinking water for the people of Thar in Pakistan. Save a life today!

Summary

Entire Tharparkar district of Pakistan is facing acute water shortage owing to the lack of routine rains. Over, eighty per cent of the people in Tharparkar is dependent on rain-fed agriculture for their livelihoods, as well as on livestock. Water shortage is a major problem in the area. In Thar, dug-wells have been found to be the only sustainable source of groundwater. People including children dying due to malnutrition, water-related diseases and lack of water is a common occurrence. Along with few local organisations, Australian Peace organization is trying to dig water wells across the villages on Tharparkar which will provide water to thousands of people living in the region.

Challenge

The Tharparkar district, spread over 22,000 square kilometres, is a chronically poor area with an estimated population of 1.2 million. Of these, 95 % live in around 2,000 villages. Water shortage is a major problem in the area. In Tharparkar, dug-wells have been found to be the only sustainable source of groundwater. During a normal day, villagers spend around four to six hours on average to fetch four to five pots (50 to 60 litres) of water from dug-wells, situated far and wide.

Long-Term Impact

This project will go a long way in improving the socioeconomic conditions of the people of Tharparkar in general and women and children in particular, Due to scarcity of water and non existence of water resources in their own Goths (villages) the women and children have to travel long distances daily to fetch water from far-flung areas. The water wells dug will provide thousands of people on the villages, ample drinking as well as usable water at their doorstep which will also improve their health.

Water pumping is generally dependent on conventional electricity. Solar pumping systems are environment-friendly and require low maintenance with no fuel cost. Keeping in view the shortage of electricity in Urban, rural and remote areas in many parts of Pakistan, Solar power pumping is one of the most promising applications using solar energy. The technology is similar to conventional water pumping system i.e. electrical submersible water pumping except that the power source is solar energy. Solar Submersible water pumping technique is gaining importance in recent years due to non-availability of electricity. The flow rate of pumped water is dependent on incident solar radiation and size of PV array. A properly designed PV system results in significant long-term cost savings as compared to conventional pumping systems. In addition, tanks can be used for water storage in place of requirement.

Solar Submersible Water Pumping are best suitable to run systems for water pumping in remote areas or where electricity has a frequent outage.

A submersible water pump operates beneath the earth's surface. Submersible Water Pump pushes water to the surface. Most submersible pumps are long cylinders that are about 3 to 5 inches' diameter and 2 to 4 feet long. Submersible Water Pumps have a hermetically sealed motor that is close-coupled to the body of the water pump. Having a hermetically sealed motor prevents the water from getting inside the pump's motor and causing a short circuit. Other components of a submersible water pump are the cable, which is connected to the motor and a pipe that transports the water to the surface. Water is then stored in water storage tanks constructed nearby Submersible water pump tube well.

The Afridev Pump is a conventional lever action hand pump. It is designed for heavy-duty use, serving communities of up to 300 persons. The Afridev Pump is fully corrosion resistant, easy to install and has excellent potential for community-based maintenance. The configuration includes an “open top” cylinder: the piston can be removed from the cylinder without dismantling the rising main. The foot valve is retractable with a fishing tool.

This pump is also known as the Deep-well piston hand pump. Community hand pumps are ideal for villages and households in which surface sources are common, so only a basic pump suffices for communities trying to meet their water requirements. Suction hand pumps are economical, easy to install and maintain. Maintenance is done at the village level without the need for specialist parts. The pumps are made from cast iron.

The Small Hand pump is a conventional lever action hand pump. It is designed for serving communities of up to 150+ persons (20-40 households). These hand pumps are fully corrosion resistant, easy to install and has excellent potential for community-based maintenance.

The small hand pump can be installed in any remote and rural/urban areas of Sindh-Pakistan. Exceptions are those deserted areas where the water level are too deep of over 100 feet.
