My name is Saja and my journey to developing the Elephant Clock began years ago in a university lecture hall whereI was exposed to a small sample of the remarkable but under-appreciated treasures buried in history that our ancestors had left to the world. 

Coming across AlJazri’s Elephant clock and exploring the Golden Age in the Muslim world had a profound impact on me. It exposed me to a deeper meaning of my identity. Islamic civilization was at its peak in progress and prosperity in the various fields of science, industry, arts and literature. There is so much that we can learn by reconnecting with that time.

With an amazing team all passionate about this vision, we founded Qirtas to shed light on the greatest inventions of this of the Golden Age. We don’t do this by telling you about them, but by allowing you to own and tinker with them directly! These are not simply inventions, they are works of art with thoughtful aesthetics and profound messages within.

Back in 2013, when this was a project thesis in universities in Germany and Jordan.

What is the Elephant clock?

Our appreciation for the Golden Age inventions, passion for design and excitement to create a valuable impact is what brought our first product to life.Al Jazri is an inventor, engineer, and artist from more than 800 years ago during the Golden Age of Muslim civilization. He invented a magnificent piece of sophisticated engineering that used to read time via water power in a rather unusual way inside the elephant belly. Not only that, AlJazri’s created a structure that symbolically integrated various cultures: India (elephant), Ancient Egypt (phoenix), China (serpents), Arab (figures) with all the pieces working together in harmony.We are here to put one of AlJazri’s most prestigious inventions, the Elephant clock, right into your hands!

The Elephant Clock Package

Through a hands-on experience, we will take you on a journey around the world to build a simplified version of the invention.

Behind The Scenes

Saja Muzaini, a passionate product designer in Saudi Arabia, graduated with a degree from Jordan and Germany. I have a huge interest in cultures and a geeky one in engineering. Combining my various interests resulted in the founding of Qirtas. Designing and developing our products is done with great love, huge amount of dedication and a big chunk of hard work.

Aws Abusalem, a visionary young entrepreneur studying International business, in the University of Massachusetts. Business to me is about reading between the lines while observing key factors in the market; in order to develop a long-term vision that polishes creative ideas and protects values to reach the masses in a strong suitable position.

ماذا لو استطعنا أن نتحدث مع أحد أعظم عقول التاريخ؟ ماذا لو أخبرتك أنه اليوم بوسعك فعل ذلك!

ليس من خلال المحادثة المباشرة ولكن بطريقة أغنى وأعمق. من خلال التفاعل مع أعظم اختراعاته وإعادة بناء منجزات حياته. الشخص الذي أعنيه هنا هو الجزري، مخترع ومهندس وفنان عاش قبل 800 عام في العصر الذهبي من الحضارة الإسلامية.

ماذا لو استطعنا أن نحاكي هذا التواصل مع كل إختراعات العصر الذهبي؟ كيف ستؤثر هذه التجارب في أبنائنا؟ وكيف سيؤثر ذلك في فهمنا لعلاقة الإسلام بالحث على المعرفة؟

اسمي سجى ورحلتي بدأت في إحدى قاعات الجامعة  قبل عدد من السنوات حين تعرّفت على كنز من الكنوز الثمينة التي لا تلقى تقديراً كافياً من الإرث الذي خلّفه أسلافنا إلى العالم.

عثوري على ساعة الفيل للجزري واكتشافي للعصر الذهبي في العالم الإسلامي كان له أثر عميق عليّ. اكتشفت معنى أعمق لهويتي. وفي نفس الوقت، كان غريبا أن هذا الحجم من الحضارة التي كانت في أوج تقدمها وازدهارها في العلم والصناعة والفنون والأدب، يغيب عن الكثير منّا.

قرطاس تأسس لنعيد تواصلنا مع تلك الحقبة الزمنية.

ما هي ساعة الفيل ؟

تقديرنا لإختراعات العصر الذهبي وشغفنا بالتصميم مع حماسِنا لترك أثر إيجابي هو ما جعل منتجنا الأول يرى النور.

اليوم نضع بين يديك إحدى أعرق إختراعات الجزري: ساعة الفيل. 

كان الساعة تحفة هندسية بارعة في الهندسة. وكانت تقرأ الوقت بطريقة غير مألوفة عن طريق استعمال الطاقة المائية داخل بطن الفيل. ليس هذا وحسب، فقد قام الجزري بصناعة المجسّم بطريقة يؤكد فيها أهمية دمج الثقافات: الهند (الفيل)، مصر القديمة (العنقاء)، الصين (الثعابين)، العرب (الأشخاص) بطريقة جعلت كل العناصر تعمل معاً بتناغم جميل.

سجى المزيني، مصممة مُنتجات شغوفة بمجالها في المملكة العربية السعودية، لدي اهتمام كبير بالثقافات وهوس بالهندسة بشكل خاص، دمج اهتماماتي كان بذرة بتأسيس قرطاس. نقوم بتصميم وتطوير منتجاتنا بتفاني لا محدود وإخلاص مصحوب بالكثير من العمل الشاق.

أوس أبو سالم، رائد أعمال شاب. طالب إدارة أعمال في جامعة ماساشوستس في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية . بالنسبة لي الأعمال والمشاريع عبارة عن قراءة ما بين السطور مع مراقبة العوامل المؤثرة في السوق لوضع رؤية طويلة المدى توجه الأفكار الإبداعية وتحمي القيم للوصول إلى الجماهير بأنسب صورة .

قرطاس مشروع ناشئ  تحتضنه جامعة الملك عبدالله للعلوم والتكنولوجيا في المملكة العربية السعودية حيث تلقى ردود أفعال ملحوظة من مستثمرين ومرشدين وعملاء.
