My New Book "The Istanbul Intrigue"

Salams everyone! I've written a novel for pre-teens, aimed at young girls. The heroine of my novel is an Australian Muslim teenager named Ayesha Dean who loves solving mysteries. She's a role model that young Muslim girls will be able to relate to. This book launch needs your help to cover costs in getting it ready for release...

Ayesha and her friends Sara and Jess jump at the chance of accompanying Ayesha's uncle on a trip from Australia to Istanbul. But when Ayesha discovers a mysterious note as a result of visiting an old bookshop, their relaxing holiday starts to get a whole lot more complicated! Ayesha finds herself trying to uncover a hundred-year-old Ibn Arabi mystery, while trying to avoid creepy villains, and still making sure that she gets to eat the best doner kebab Istanbul has to offer. It's all in a day's sleuthing when you're Ayesha Dean.  Lucky she can count on her best friends to always have her back!

Why This Book Matters!

In today's popular culture, young Muslims are constantly being bombarded with images and "role models" that don't necessarily speak to them as Muslims. There is little emphasis on a sense of spirituality and how this fits in with living in a modern environment.

At the same time, young Muslims can often be faced with a very rigid and strict understanding of Islam that doesn't allow much room for just having fun or entertainment either. This can have a negative impact of making Islam seem out of date.

So within this environment, I wanted to create a strong, modern Muslim female heroine that young girls could relate to. Someone who was confident in herself as a Muslim, who has a strong sense of spirituality, and yet still enjoys hanging out with her friends as a teenager, enjoys wearing nice clothes, and experiencing new things!

The Project

For the past 6 years I was working as a Crown prosecutor, prosecuting serious offences in the courts and I've worked in the area of anti-corruption. Previously I spent some time working for the United Nations in The Hague assisting in the prosecution of war crimes that had been committed in the former Yugoslavia. 

I think my interest in criminal law helped me in writing some of the scenes in my book!
