Help us get 1250 Backpacks!

Prior to the start of each school year since 2008, MAS Bay Area has provided thousands of backpacks full of school supplies to foster and orphan children in the South Bay Area. We have expanded our reach to children of victims of domestic violence, refugee children, and children living in poverty. This year our goal is to provide backpacks full of school supplies to 1,250 local children and youth in need.

What is MAS Bay Area?

MAS Bay Area is a local chapter of the Muslim American Society, a non-profit educational and service organization. Its goal is to educate Muslims about their religion in a balanced way while encouraging civic participation, and to partner with other faith and community organizations to serve their fellow Americans.

What is the Back to School Project?

Though the San Francisco Bay Area is a wealthy place, there are many children who cannot afford many of the most basic things in life – including school supplies. Without the right school supplies, children may have a hard time succeeding in school, which will affect how well they do for the rest of their lives. This is why MAS Bay Area does the Back to School Project every year. We help provide backpacks to children who are in the child welfare system in Santa Clara County – meaning they are orphans or foster children. We also provide supplies to children of women who have been victims of domestic violence. The first year of the project, 2008, we provided This is our 8th year of the project.
In 2015, we hope to serve 1,250 children and youth with our backpacks full of supplies. Our project almost entirely depends on individual donations.

What is in each backpack?

Colored pencils, crayons, markers, glue stick, facial tissue box, #2 pencils, pencil box, eraser, binder paper and/or notebook, folders with pockets, pens, backpack, an informational card with a written description of the project and its supporters.

Why your help is vital?

1. Back pack is a first step towards enabling a child to seek knowledge.

2. Knowledge is a power that can transform a child's life.

3. Know that your donation is transforming a life for a greater good.

Which organizations receive the backpacks?

We reach the children and youth through our community partners who are already working with those in need:

CORRECTED LINK: MAS Bay Area - 9th Annual Back to School Project is live!

Ramadan Kareem,

Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said: "The believer's shade on the day of resurrection will be his charity" (Al-Tirmadhi)

Last year with your generous donations we not only achieved our goal, in-fact we exceeded.  Your generosity enabled us to not only distribute 1250 backpack full of supplies to local foster children, in addition it enabled us to purchase 300 books for needy.

This year MAS 9th Backpack drive is back with a bigger goal, 1500 backpacks and 500 books! Indeed our goal is challenging this year, but with your donations, support and duas,  we can definitely cross the finish line. Can we count on you this year?

Thank you!

Assalamu 'alaikum,

On behalf of MAS Bay Area and the entire Backpack Project team, I wanted to you for your support of the 8th Annual Back to School Backpack Project. With the blessing of Allah (swt), it was a huge success by many measures.

1. We raised more money for the project than any other year. Though the LaunchGood campaign, a grant from United Muslim Relief, students of Silicon Valley Academy, a community grant from Kohl's, supporters from PayPal and the general community, we raised approximately $12,500!

2. We were able to expand the project this year to provide books to children not yet in school and so wouldn't receive a backpack.

3. We were blessed with the help of approximately 150 volunteers throughout the day, including some employees of Kohl's, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, toddlers, and Sons of Service!

4. Most importantly, we were able to touch the lives of approximately 1400 kids (1200 backpacks and 200 books).

You can view pictures from the event here.

We look forward to your continued involvement in the Backpack Project and MAS Bay Area's other initiatives.

If you are interested in keeping up with MAS Bay Area activities, please visit our website and click on 'Newsletter' on the upper right hand side.

Thank you and jazakumAllahu khairan.

Thanks to you we are only $1000 away from reaching our goal!

Asalamoalikum and peace to our supporters,

We have only two days left to reach our goal, Inshallah. Thank you for your support and generous donations. Please help us spread the word in these last two days of Ramadan by sharing our campaign with friends and family via emails, texts and Facebook.

By the blessings of Allah we have received a financial grant, therefore we have reduced our goal from $10,000 to $7500. Right now we are close to $6500, only $1000 away from reaching our goal. Help us get to the finish line by spreading the word.

Regards,

MAS Backpack Team
