Educate, Empower & Build Communities for Social Justice

The Problem: Islamophobia

Islamophobia affects us all. Anti-Muslim bigotry has made it possible for the overt re-emergence of old and well tested racism in America and across many parts of Europe.

We just released the Islamophobia Reporting App so as to make it easy to file an incident report.

The rising tide of Islamophobia visible in mainstream political circles and reflected in the media leaves the Muslim community vulnerable and facing grave danger. Racist and Islamophobic rhetoric has already translated into violent and deadly incidents across the country, with further armed threats directed at Muslim institutions and individuals now almost a daily occurrence.

We need a greater, more sustained response that both examines the roots of Islamophobia and provides the empirical data to quantify the problem. Only then can we develop the tools required to educate policymakers and civil society on how best to counter Islamophobia.

Our Solution:The Islamophobia Studies Center

The Islamophobia Studies Center is an educational not for profit research project dedicated to countering the pernicious rise of Islamophobia in society through use of applied research, publication, social media campaigns, workshops, conferences and media engagement. The Center's mission is focused on challenging the basic assumptions that are utilized to "otherize" Islam and Muslims while at the same time providing a counter narrative that is rooted in evidence and empirical research.

Currently, the Center works to publish the Islamophobia Studies Journal and host a series of conferences including annual gatherings in Berkeley, Paris, Montreal, London and Austria as well as similar number of workshops intended to foster community responses to the racist phenomena.

What Can You Do? Support Justice, Equality, and Fairness for American Muslims

Help build the Islamophobia Studies Center to structurally and academically respond to this rising threat.

Currently, Islamophobia Studies Center is run by 100% volunteers without a staff or resources to undertake the massive work needed to challenge Islamophobia and reverse the trend. Funding is needed to publish the Islamophobia Studies Journal, continue to organize conferences, hold training workshops, deploy a robust social media campaign and engage academic institutions and policy makers on the basis of sound research.

We need your help to make this happen

Funding Will Support The Following Areas:

  •  Train and support student researchers to receive, gather, and process data
  •  Identify community and campus partners who can assist in capacity building
  •  Publish and share research findings
  •  Create space for mutual learning, research development, and project coordination
  •  Launch the Islamophobia phone app and collect timely data (in progress)
  •  Develop a centralized research website on Islamophobia (underway)
  •  Continue to expand the network of academic conferences around the world
  •  Develop course and syllabus guidelines for classes focused on Islamophobia
  •  Organize academic working teams to recommend and issue policy papers
  •  Foster creative engagement on Islamophobia via the arts, poetry and video productions.
  •  Establish & facilitate courses that can provide students background on Islamophobia as well as   effective  research methodology for data collection
  •  Support graduate student researchers to supervise data collection and research projects
  •  Provide financial support to students who propose research projects focusing on specific issues related to Islamophobia that need more attention
  • Identify community and campus partners who can assist in capacity building
  • Work with the existing project at University of California Berkeley’s Center for Race & Gender, which will provide immediate logistical and academic support
  • Continue to partner with Zaytuna College, Graduate Theological Union Center for Islamic Studies, Arab and Muslim Diaspora and Ethnicities ofthe School of Ethnic Studies, SFSU.
  • Develop a robust faculty network dedicated to working on the subject of Islamophobia
  • Publish research findings in bi-annual journal
  • Publish annual report on the status of Islamophobia in the US while partnering with community civil rights organizations
  • Re-design and update the website that defines and contextualizes Islamophobia, shares research findings, and connects scholars to one another

Join And Mobilize To Combat Islamophobia

At the Center we have developed a global network of academics and community based activist dedicated to challenging the underpinnings of Islamophobia at the intellectual and institutional levels. Forging an academic area of specialization and the Islamophobia field of studies is key to begin to document and then in due to time to challenge the "otherization" of Muslims in civil society. Data and applied research is directly connected to policy formation and the Center is dedicated to making a qualitative difference in the work being done at an academic and community levels.

Islamophobia is all around us and it effects the health and well-being of Muslims young and old alike. The Muslim community deserves justice, equality and fairness. This will not happen if we don't do the hard work to mount a sustained response. Please join us and kindly donate and help our center carry out its mission. Thank you.

ISC Benefit Dinner 2020

Assalamualaikum,

ISC is getting in touch to invite you to attend ISC's Annual Fundraiser: 2020 Elections & Muslim Narratives, which will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020, at the Chandni Restaurant in Newark, California.

Because of your previous support, our Center has become one of the most well established academic networks on Islamophobia research in the world.  We ask you to join us for dinner again as we share the impact and breadth of islamophobia as it manifests itself during this election cycle.  Hate crimes spike during election cycles and our speakers will discuss how islamophobia and racism are politicized and utilized as a tool; effectively normalizing dangerous rhetoric and moving islamophobia from the theatre of harassment to possibly fully institutionalized and systematic legislations.

As a previous supporter your help has been critical to the success of our endeavor, and we look forward to seeing you in person,

Thank You!

Al-salam alikum Supporters and Donors,

On behalf of the Islamophobia Studies Center team and volunteers, I would like to express the deepest sense of gratitude for making the LaunchGood campaign a success.

Your generous contributions will make it possible for a number of critical programs to take shape and for the academic and research agenda to move forward.  As you know, We have already launched the Islamophobia Reporting App with an accompanying website to make it possible for data collection and reporting to take place on a national level.

The fundraising campaign was a major step for the Center's effort and we look forward to share the accomplishments that will be made possible by all your donations.

I ask Allah to recompense you in the hereafter and in this world, to grant you and all your loved ones good health, peace and increase your blessings in that which is seen and that which is only in the knowledge of Allah.  May these blessed days be the ones that make all of you actualize your highest hopes and aspirations.

A message from Bosnia!

Dear donors and supporters,

I am writing to you from Sarajevo, Bosnia while attending and speaking at the European Islamophobia Summit.  The first day of the Summit was held at the Sarajevo National Library, the site of the largest book burning events in the history of Europe when Serb forces set fire to the book collection, as an act of intellectual genocide.

It is important to remember that burning of libraries was also a major feature during the expulsion of Muslims and Jews from Spain where the libraries of Cordoba, Granada and others were put to the torch before and after 1492.

Today, I will be visiting the many cemeteries in and around Sarajevo that has the graves of those murdered during the Bosnian Genocide.  I will be offering prayers and supplications for all during the month of Ramadan.

The visit is a reminder to you and myself of the real consequences of bigotry and what Islamophobia can lead to if not checked.  Over 250,000 Muslims in the region were put to death during this period and the erasure of what happened to them continues to this very day, as the Bosnian Genocide does not get mentioned when speaking of modern European history and anti-Muslim discourses.

This is a reminder that the work we do on Islamophobia has real and tangible consequences and Bosnia remind us that it is a possibility and that hate, bigotry and racism once coupled with nationalism and xenophobia can have devastating consequences.

I am asking you to help in reaching out to friends and colleagues in the next few days and urge them to contribute to social justice based education and research.  In Bosnia, I can see the real impacts of Islamophobia but also the daily struggle to overcome and build a different future, insha'Allah

All the best and in struggle,

Hatem
