Launching Muslims into Hollywood - One Film at a Time

Changing the Narrative of Who American Muslims Are

The mass media has an undoubtedly powerful influence on society's perceptions and beliefs about the subjects portrayed.  Studies show that approximately 70% of Americans form their opinions from film & TV.  The negative and inaccurate portrayal of Muslims in American mass media and film remains a cause for concern.

Telling Our Story: ISF Film Fund

The Islamic Scholarship Fund (ISF) recognizes this problem and believes that the most effective way to tackle it is from within.  Since its inception in 2008, ISF has supported outstanding Muslim students to pursue careers in the field of humanities.  Through self-representation and direct involvement, students can re-direct the discourse and establish a positive and correct portrayal of Muslims.

The Islamic Scholarship Fund Film Grant specifically aims to facilitate and support Muslims entering the world of film, who intend to create artistic, engaging and positive stories about Muslims.  The chosen recipients will receive a $20,000 grant for a narrative film and $10,000 for a documentary film. This allows the filmmakers to focus their energy and attention entirely on the creative process.  Grant recipients will also receive mentorship and/or networking opportunities from an industry professional to help further the advancement of their script and film.

Last year we awarded our first Film Grant to filmmaker, Justin Mashouf, for his film ReMade Men. Justin is an Emmy winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Justin's films focus on the blurring of borders, social justice and his unique interactions with the Muslim world. His work has screened internationally on Al Jazeera as well as various international film festivals. He will be using the funding for a documentary he is in the process of shooting which has the working title of Re-Made Men. The film documents the life of a Muslim convert re-entering society after serving most of his adult life in prison and the inspirational transitional program that serves to help transform him into a leader of the South Side Chicago community.

How You Can Support

ISF has had success with many of its film recipients as award winning filmmakers, from winning Emmy awards to sitting down with NBC executives, we can take this even further with giving the filmmaker the tools for making their films and creating more opportunities for Muslims in Hollywood.

The funds will be given to the winning filmmaker who has provided ISF with the strongest story that will create a positive images of Muslim in Hollywood. The funds will go to equipment, crew, production and post-production.

1. Donate to the film fund! All donations are tax deductible.

2. Use the social media tools above to spread the word!

Help ISF reach its goal to launch more Muslims in Hollywood and change the narrative of who Muslims are, one film at a time!
