Help us rebuild the oldest mosque in North Austin

UPDATE: Attacked again on Sept 13th

Dear sisters and brothers,

Assalamu alikum wa rahmatu Allah. May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be with you.

NAMCC was again vandalized during the early morning of Thursday September 13, 2018. A fence was damaged and multiple vehicles had their tires slashed. The Austin Police were notified and we trust our brave men and women in uniform are doing all they can to apprehend the suspect.

Islam teaches us to be steadfast and persevering for peace and harmony. Even though some may harbor and sometimes express hate towards Islam and Muslims, we will continue to worship God and serve the Austin Community through our outreach programs, free clinic, and food pantry. We will continue to grow our services to benefit all of human-kind.

Please continue to share our campaign so that we can repair the masjid, provide security to the community, and continue to serve the City of Austin.

The comfort and security of our community is a top priority. If you have any questions, email the Imam: imam@namcc.org

What happened

You may have become aware of the vandalism which left the masjid with notable damage. No one was hurt alhamdulillah.

Sunday morning at 1:30 am (September 2nd 2018) the burglary alarm system went off and police were notified by the alarm company and NAMCC administrator Mustafa to check on the property. At 2:05 police arrived and spent 30 minutes surveying the property and its surroundings while recording the incident. We have a security camera system, however, the quality of recording would not allow for face recognition or identification of individual. The recording shows a white-skinned (appearing) young man (18-24 year old) with a black hoodie and jeans with slim build. The perpetrator entered the property after compromising a few panels of the wooden fence near the trash dumpster and proceeded to front door of the masjid. He then broke the glass of the front entrance of the main hall running to the side entrance (sisters' side) to break both the door and window glass. The perpetrator was then seen moving across the parking lot to stop and puncture an overnight parked vehicle's tires before he fled from where entered the property.

Keeping our community safe

We are working with police on identification of the perpetrator and recorded the incident as a hate crime with Austin Police Department. Meanwhile, the EC is taking several preventive measures to secure the property and members:

  • Starting from tonight, an armed security personnel will be present on the property from 11:00 pm to 5:00 am every day until is deemed unnecessary
  • New doors and windows glass are on special order, meanwhile, broken glass has been temporarily replaced with plywood boards until delivery within the next week.
  • We plan to install a new reliable camera security system with high quality resolution (option 2) using funds from construction account until we can secure the funds from fundraising
  • Cost of external installation and materials estimate of $50k-$70k
  • Similar or better quality system would cost $15k-$20k. We need volunteers from the community to help pulling wires - no technical background required
  • Use video surveillance companies, however, the investment is too high
  • Improve lighting in unlit or dark areas around the property

Community vigilance: apparently, a member of the community may have talked the perpetrator last Thursday around 9:30 pm at Isha time. If you suspect a person may be on property for other than prayer please take caution not to confront or converse with suspect and notify us or call police directly. In such cases, and if possible, it would be helpful to use your phone camera to capture a picture of such intruders.

Help us rebuild and grow stronger

We ask that the community come together at this difficult time to support each other, protect ourselves, families and masjid and not pointing fingers at individuals. Meanwhile, the EC thanks all the brothers who rushed to help providing all kinds of support this morning, including donations for today's damages. What we ask from community members is to come forward and help with donation, time, or at minimum constructive words of support and dua for this community.

We ask Allah to protect our community, families, properties and all Muslims around the globe. Jazakum Allahu Khairan.

Salamu alaikum,

NAMCC Executive Committee

    Security Project Update

    Dear sisters and brothers,

Assalamu alikum wa rahmatu Allah. May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be with you.

All praises are due to Allah. With the help of the Almighty we have made good progress on our planned security improvement since the day of the vandalism attack.

We've extended hours for on-site security personnel, now the security presence covers the period of 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM leaving no gap between night and morning prayer times.

Furthermore, installation is underway for two city street-size lamps to illuminate the unlit south side of the property along the fence. We're working directly with City of Austin on this.

Camera security systems professionals have surveyed the property, and created a fully integrated plan for the entire area; including 3 buildings, 2 parking lots, and the playground. This plan will take place in 4 stages:

    1. ✅Main building ethernet cable wiring for planned cameras, completed over the past weekend
    2. Fiber optic cable installation between the three buildings is underway
    3. Enterprise 100G switches planned to connect buildings are on order while cabling installation in progress
    4. Ethernet cabling for the two remaining buildings is scheduled for this weekend. 👉Volunteering opportunity is open, no professional knowledge is required, we have professionals to supervise
    5. Finalized hardware list currently estimated between $17K-$18K. Placing order in the next couple of days with complete installation of system by end of September, parts include:
      • High storage capacity, 64 channels enterprise NVR
      • High definition (4k/8MP) enterprise cameras, including several advanced PTZ cameras
      • Game cameras for installation in mobile and unexpected locations
      • High definition monitoring screen for large number camera viewing
      • Enterprise router and multiple WIFI AP to enhance coverage around the property
      • Enterprise fanned IT closet with power supply and surge protector for safe protecting valuable equipment
      • Ethernet cables and accessories for wire connection
      • Enterprise managed PoE 48/24 ports network switches with 100G SFP+ stacking capabilities
      • Multimode 10G/40G fiber optic cables
      • Installation hardware such brackets, camera mounts and other accessories

We will keep you updated on the project progress as we continue working on it every time a milestone is completed.

We thank you for generous financial support, your presence and volunteering at the property, for your kindly, fully heartening comments and words of support, and for keeping the masjid in your prayer.

Thanks to your help, new glass has been installed!

    Salaam,

Thank you so much for supporting us! Whether your donation was big or small, your generosity has and will continue to strengthen our community. With your help, we have been able to clean up the damage, remove the temporary plywood boards, and replace the glass on our doors and windows.

Please continue to donate, and share our campaign with your family and friends! We still need to install a new, more reliable security system estimated at $50k-$70k for installation and materials.

Thank you again for your help!
