Help for Humanity is inspired by the efforts of Shaykh Hassan Cisse (RA), a renowned Islamic scholar and humanitarian from Senegal, West Africa. Each month for countless decades, Shaykh Hassan distributed rice to underresourced families in Senegal. His efforts sustained hundreds of families throughout the country.
Ajib and Hassan Abdus-Salaam, two African American students who attended Shaykh Hassan's Qu'ran school during the 1980's and 1990's witnessed his efforts firsthand. Inspired by Shaykh Hassan's tireless commitment to serving his community, Ajib and Hassan sought to continue his legacy. In 2012, they teamed up with other Americans who had studied and lived in Shaykh Hassan's community in Senegal. Together, they started Help for Humanity, an initiative to address the problem of hunger, one family at a time. In 2015, with the help of more than 150 supporters, they raised over $9000 to feed 25 families for the entire year. This Ramadan, they want to expand their efforts to support 50 families for an entire year!
Approximately 47.6% of people in Senegal are estimated to live in poverty. In rural areas, such as Kaolack where Help for Humanity works, 1 out of every 4 households experiences food insecurity, which means that they do not consistently have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. By distributing rice to families each month, Help for Humanity directly addresses this issue. Our ongoing efforts have helped families feed themselves and maintain healthy, active lives.
Our mission is to address the problem of hunger, one family at a time. Since the beginning of 2012, we have distributed more than five tons (approximately 11,000 lbs) of rice to families in Senegal. A $25 donation can feed a family of four for an entire month. We have accomplished that goal and now we are soaring to new heights.
Last year, we began expanding our support base from our immediate circles to a global community of concerned individuals. With your support in 2015, we created a consistent, monthly campaign to address hunger in Senegal. Before the start of Ramadan in 2015, we secured money to provide rice for 25 families for an entire year. For an individual family, knowing that they will have the major source of their food secured will relieve a great deal of stress and burden. This Ramadan, we want to expand our efforts to support 50 families for an entire year!
Everyone involved with Help for Humanity has spent considerable time over the last three decades in Kaolack. We have seen firsthand how families eagerly gather around a plate of food and instinctively invite a hungry neighbor to join them. We have seen firsthand how mothers stretch food meant for their immediate family because they cannot eat knowing their relatives go hungry. We have seen the powerful ways in which members of the Kaolack community embody the Prophetic spirit, rallying together to support one another in the midst of poverty.
As we studied Islam during our time in Kaolack, we wanted to pay it forward to the community that so generously supported our own personal and spiritual growth. Through the rice distribution initiative of Help for Humanity, we cultivate long-lasting, trusting partnerships with the Kaolack community to help address the problem of hunger.
Help for Humanity is an initiative of Nasrul Ilm America, a nationally registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Nasrul Ilm America endeavors to promote understanding, cooperation, and engagement between Muslim and non-Muslim communities through education, humanitarianism, and cultural exchange.

Word has rapidly spread throughout Kaolack about our food distribution program. Each month, the line of hungry people awaiting bags of rice continues to grow.
