The 2015 Ramadan Challenge: Because together we are an unstoppable force for Good!

The Challenge: 30 Days of Supporting Amazing People & Projects

Ramadan is a time of sacrifice, of pushing ourselves to do more than we do all year through fasting, prayer and of course charity. Even the Prophet Muhammad himself (blessings and peace of God be upon him) was extra generous in Ramadan, as described by Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):

The challenge is incredibly simple:

  • STEP 1: Sign Up - pledge $1 here and you will be signed up. As a bonus, we'll send you a special "Good Will Prevail" pin for being part of the challenge.
  • STEP 2: Challenge Your Friends - invite your friends to participate, or add their emails to the sign up process and we'll do it for you!
  • STEP 3: Check Your Email - once Ramadan starts you will receive an email every morning with 1 recommended amazing project to support
  • STEP 4: Support Projects - donate as little as $1, either to the recommended project or any of your choice.

Inspired by the Kassig Family

Our inspiration for this summer's theme comes from the Kassig family. On a crisp fall Sunday last year, November 16, 2014, Abdul-Rahman Peter Kassig - an idealistic, loving young American and convert to Islam doing aid work in Syria - was brutally murdered by ISIS. Later that evening, Abdul-Rahman Peter's parents, Paula and Ed Kassig, spoke at their church in Indianapolis and shared these inspiring words:

"Our hearts are battered, but they will mend. The world is broken, but it will be healed in the end. And good will prevail as the one God of many names will prevail."

We Are Not Victims, But Agents of Change

Turn on any news source - CNN, BBC, Fox, even your Facebook & Twitter feeds - and you are bombarded with negative news from the Muslim community, locally and abroad. ISIS, Boko Haram, Charlie Hebdo, Pamela Geller and more dominate the headlines. Even a recent Pew study found in America that Muslims were viewed as the least favorable faith group, with the majority of Americans having negative feelings about Muslims.

But we are not victims of our circumstances. In the same Pew study, it was found that if someone knew a Muslim that considerably improved their perception of Muslims and Islam. Indeed, amidst all the negativity, countless acts both small and large of meaningful acts of kindness continue to radiate light upon the Ummah.

Rather than choosing to be victims, Muslims worldwide have an opportunity to become agents of change. With Ramadan right around the corner, LaunchGood wants to challenge you to make the most out of this holy month by supporting those who are striving to make a positive difference in the world

Together We Are A Force For Good

"Indeed, God loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly." 61:4

We underestimate our strength when we work in numbers. Individually, we can accomplish little, but collectively we become a force for good.

As an example, no single donors has ever funded a whole LaunchGood campaign by themselves. But the majority of campaigns on LaunchGood have been funded, because dozens and dozens of people come together. In fact, the average successful campaign only has about 75 donors.

The Good Will Prevail Challenge will have at least 500 donors signed up to start, and at 500 donors it means almost every single day this group will completely fund a project. By the end of Ramadan, it should be 30 fully-funded projects, all simply because a group of people decided together they would make a difference.

Challenge Accepted!

Are You In?

This challenge won't be easy, but the rewards, both spiritual and material, have the potential to create a ripple effect throughout the Ummah. LaunchGood wants to channel the giving efforts of Muslims worldwide to make this Ramadan a memorable one. So what do you say?

F.A.Q.

How will the recommended project of the day be selected? By the crowd. On our Facebook page we will have a place where anyone can vote for their favorite projects, and whatever is the favorite project by midnight EST will be the recommended project the following day.

Can a single project be recommended more than once? No, every day will be a unique project.

Can I donate more than $1? Of course! $1 is the minimum, not the only option. In fact there should be some great rewards at all sorts of giving levels in projects.

What if I forget to donate one day? You can make up for it by donating twice the following day.

What if I don't want to donate to the recommended project? Go ahead and choose any project to support, even one you did before

Do I get a reward for completing the 30 day challenge? You'll have to see to find out!

What if I have more questions? Reach out to us in our contact page

Don't forget to donate! + Vote for next project

As salaam alaikum,

What a great first day of Ramadan! Can't wait to share the numbers in tomorrow's email of the day - one surprise was how widespread the donations were.

2 quick reminders:

  • DONATE - to those who haven't donated to a project yet (especially the late signups), make sure to support a project today! Al-Shifa was highlighted this morning as the Project of the Day: launchgood.com/alshifa
  • VOTE - want to have a say who's next? Vote on our Facebook voting system to choose! Really cool way to browse quickly all the projects as well. Go here.

Goal Reached!! Next steps, including cute story of father & daughter

As salaam alaikum,

Wow, over 500 people have signed up for the Ramadan Challenge, incredible! Specifically in the last 48 hours alone we've had 150 people sign up. Just in time with Ramadan beginning tonight inshallah - an early, heartfelt Ramadan Mubarak to all!

So now what?

  • Daily Email - at the most basic level, sit back and wait for the first email of the day to come into your inbox tomorrow (Thursday) morning. You can support the suggested project in the email or choose your own from LaunchGood's discover page.
  • Fan Vote - have a say in which projects are selected as the suggested project of the day! To do this, visit our Facebook voting page. Note: You only have 1 vote, so use it wisely!
  • Patience & Flexibility - this is our first time trying this crazy idea, and we're sure there'll be some bumps in the road. We ask you have patience with us while we pilot this unique crowd-giving challenge!

Cute Story: Finally, for the parents out there, one of my friend's Matheen shared with me a really cool idea he's planning with his 11-year-old daughter, Ayesha (picture below). Ayesha will check the daily suggestion, they'll discuss at suhoor or iftar time, and decide together which project to donate to and how much to send. She's very excited to be involved - what a great way to teach our kids charity & helping others!

If you have cool ideas & stories like that, please share back with me I'd love to hear it!

Wasalam,
Chris

ps - if anyone needs help crowdfunding their own projects, either now in Ramadan or in the future, please feel welcome to contact me directly :)
