Be a part of planting seeds of change and nurturing faithful farming. Support a Muslim Farmer!

Help me become Stony Point Center's first full-time Muslim farmer!

We are doubling the size of our farm at Stony Point Center! This will cost approximately $50,000 and we need your help raising $11,000.

Approximately 1,095 days ago, I joined the Community of Living Traditions, a multifaith (Muslim, Jewish, and Christian) intentional community, as the Farm Apprentice at the Stony Point Conference and Retreat Center in the Lower Hudson Valley.  Through the daily work of tending the soil on this land, my continued Muslim faith practice has deepened my roots in farming and farming has nurtured the growth of my faith. Incredibly, as my apprenticeship draws to a close, we have the opportunity to farm more land...all that is needed is your help to fund another Farmer, ME!

Meet the Farmer

I come from long lines of farmers on both sides of my family: dairy, beef, and crop farmers near the Mississippi in Wisconsin and orange growers beside the Mediterranean in Palestine. In my lifetime the seed of love for working with the earth sprouted when I was a little kid working in the backyard garden with my mom. My commitment to working with the land and my deep rootedness as a Muslim always went hand in hand. From a very young age I’ve been living into the the teaching of Prophet Mohammad (as) that asks us to take care of the earth because she is like a mother to us.

This opportunity to be a full-time farmer at Stony Point Center grounds me firmly in this teaching and will provide new growth for the work of Stony Point farm in the form of…

-MORE CARROTS! And all the other vegetables and fruits, too.  The addition of another full-time farmer will enable us to expand the hospitality we offer to guests at the conference center through more locally-grown produce.  Hospitality is a way of living out all of our faith traditions.

-SUSTAINED SOLIDARITY! Just like we need more hands in the soil, we need more laborers in the field of justice. Islamic land ethic requires care for the land, the animals AND the the people who live and labor on it.  As a farmer at Stony Point Center I will live out this ethic by strengthening the farm’s commitment to stand in solidarity with farmworkers and the people Indigenous to this land, the land that feeds us.

-SHARING the CARING! Working with the land through the lens of the Islamic tradition gives me a window into what it means to live in right relationship to the land. The farmer position at Stony Point Center enables me to be generous with what I’ve learned by teaching Multifaith earthcare to a diversity of guest groups, speaking about Islamic land ethic at conferences focused on faith and farming, and engaging in conversations within the Community of Living Traditions.

It takes a community

If there is anything I’ve learned from farming, it’s that growth takes a community and a whole lot of faith. The farm expansion will increase the amount of land in production twofold, which will require an additional full-time farmer (and her salary), farm equipment (including seeds, cisterns, soil...the sunshine is free), and transportation costs (travel to the new off-site farmland, to faith & farming conferences, and to wherever the march for justice leads).

How you can be connected to this work!

Thanks to you we’ve reached our goal...and then some!

As Salamu Alaikum! May peace and blessings be upon you!

As I scrolled through the donor page on our campaign website reading the over 700 names of people who contributed, my eyes welled with tears - tears of gratitude. As I mentioned in the campaign, if there is anything I’ve learned from farming it’s that it takes community and a whole lot of faith...you all are that generous community and I am deeply grateful for your faith in this project.

The farm expansion is underway and growing beautifully, so please stay in touch! You can sign up for Stony Point Center’s E-newsletter, watch our monthly Soil Report from the farm, listen in on our bi-weekly podcast Faith in Farming, and watch the season’s pass on our Instagram page. But better yet, come and see Stony Point Center farm grow for yourself! Please come visit us - we’d love to host you for a night (or more!) and share a home-cooked meal. It would be my honor to show you around our farm.

See you soon insha’Allah!

In peace and gratitude,

Amirah AbuLughod
