DeepDeen is an initiative developed by Cambridge Islamic College.

Under Shaykh Dr. Akram Nadwi’s leadership and profound scholarship, CIC are already pioneers in Online Islamic Education, being the first Islamic institution to live stream seminars. Naturally, given their location in a renowned seat of academia such as Cambridge, they pride themselves on transforming lives through producing Western Islamic scholarship, with a focus on accelerated learning. 

It is quite apt that the world’s first online Islamic platform focused on deeper knowledge is spearheaded by a scholar that perhaps encapsulates the very meaning of the word. Shakyh Dr Akram Nadwi has dedicated his life to mastery in scholarship, perhaps best demonstrated in his ground-breaking research on the female scholars of Islam in the field of Hadith. This research spanned a period of 15 years and resulted in the 57-volume work detailing and analysing the biographies of over 9000 female scholars from the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) until today. This work is hailed as a unique masterpiece in the history of Islam.

We are undoubtedly living in the information age. Everything and anything is available to us at the mere touch of a button, a Siri request or a swipe away. Alhamdulillah. 

Whilst this is an amazing phenomenon and has provided us with an unprecedented access to knowledge never before enjoyed - there is a huge problem this excess has led to for the Ummah.

Superficiality.

A lack of substance.

Surface-level Islam.

A short attention span.

Not going deep enough in your knowledge and being able to understand Islam properly leads to a lack of faith, a lack of action, and consequently a lack of any real benefit, as our worship becomes ritualistic and tokenistic.

We watch five minute summary clips of scholars and enjoy the quick spiritual boost it gives us. We attend the local talk at the mosque or the large Islamic conference and enjoy the temporary high for a few hours, perhaps a few days afterwards. We may even attend a weekend course on a particular subject and feel our Islam has been enhanced significantly. Until we get back to work or school the following Monday, that is.

This is all positive of course. There are lots of amazing courses, YouTube lectures and seminars around for us to take benefit from, and so we should.

However, what if you want more? What if you’ve exhausted many of the more basic resources but are not yet ready to go into the scholar-level materials?

What was the last course or lecture that you watched that you can honestly say truly impacted your life?

What exactly is out there for the serious seeker of knowledge who wants more depth, more understanding in their deen?

The Solution lies in Scholarship!

The Sahabah had the true transformational benefit of Islam more than anyone. After that it was the scholars - and why?

It is because they went deep! They had full immersion in their religion, which led to a very strong, sophisticated understanding. That understanding led to strong, fearless action.

That’s why they were able to impact the world, and those around them even to this day.

Once you understand something at the right level, that will automatically create the right actions for you.

If we understood Islam like the Sahabah understood it, would we still be the same as we are today? Or would we get more benefit out of our understanding of our deen?

The benefit of going deep into your deen is not scholarship itself - scholarship is just a byproduct. No, the benefit of going deep is that it actually allows you to squeeze the most juice out of your religion for the maximum benefit of yourself, your family and most importantly, your akhirah!

The more you know about your deen, the more benefit you get. The deep you go, the more you'll love Islam.

By studying Islam in a different way, with a different paradigm and a deeper understanding, we can finally begin to live our Islam like it was meant to be lived.
