Coconuts for Classrooms!

Providing innovative and sustainable educational solutions for orphan and needy children in Sri Lanka.

Puttalam, Sri Lanka Education

This campaign was reached its goal on {{createDate('Sun, 27 Apr 2014 08:00:00 +0000') | date:'MMM d, y h:mm a'}}.

The Cause: Coconuts for Classrooms!

Cultivating coconuts in Sri Lanka that will serve as source of revenue and cover the educational costs for Sri Lankan orphans!

Our school campus in Puttalam, Sri Lanka, is home to 120 coconut trees and with just a small investment these trees can become fruit-bearing. These coconuts will then be sold, providing a source of revenue for the school which will be used to help cover the educational needs of the orphan and impoverished children that we look after.

The Project: Coconut Cultivation

The Sri Lanka field office proposes to rehabilitate these 120 coconut trees by:

  • Constructing an appropriate irrigation system on 2 acres of land
  • Obtaining and utilizing the correct fertilizer to ensure trees bear fruit
  • Obtaining and utilizing  the appropriate composting
  • Manage the project, market and sell goods to obtain maximum value.

Thereafter, we hope that the funds raised from the sale of coconuts to the local market will help us to cover the costs of the school. School costs include, but are not limited to:

  • Transport for children
  • School meals
  • Medical check ups
  • School maintenance.

We hope that the forthcoming income from the sale of the coconuts will, in sha’ Allah, be able to help contribute to these costs.

A Coconut Tree in Your Name!

The total required to kick-start this project is $1,320, all inclusive. We are thus sponsoring trees for just $11 a tree – an incredible sadaqah jaariyah project, which you can dedicate in your name or the name of a loved one (living or no longer with us).

Anyone who sponsors a tree will be emailed a PDF certificate with their designated name on, for you to print off and share with family and friends!

The Impact

Education is one of the most precious gifts we can give. In today's world, it is more important than ever to ensure children have access to a good quality education.  At school, students not only bring their minds and imaginations to life, but also empower themselves for an independent future full of opportunities.

The project has the potential to raise $5,000 over the next 5 years for the school, in sha’ Allah, and we hope that you can join us in this innovative project!

Muslim Hands in Sri Lanka

A quarter of a century of civil war followed by a devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami of December 2004, left Sri Lanka in a state of turmoil. Housing, tourism and infrastructure in general were almost completely destroyed along the eastern coast.
Once regarded as a middle income nation, Sri Lanka was overwhelmed by the mass scale of the disaster.
Since 2004, Muslim Hands has played a much needed role amongst needy communities in Sri Lanka by providing vital food supplies, water, sanitation and orphans care through by establishing schools in the country.
Muslim Hands runs a flagship school in Puttalam, providing a vital educational lifeline for orphan and needy children.
