Help Empower refugee women in Jordan through virtual language exchange with female college students studying Arabic

Supporting Refugees one call a time!

Support this campaign and help us raise the funds needed to run the Banaat Connect Program for 2017/2018!

First Goal: $9000 USD

Second Goal: $5000 USD

Total Asking: $14,000 USD.

Banaat Connect (or Girls Connect) is a virtual language exchange program that connects female college students in the US studying Arabic to underprivileged refugee women in Jordan who seek to improve their language skills, via Skype.

Online, real-time conversational language lessons in English and Arabic with professional, bilingual curriculums.

Based in Jerash Refugee Camp in Jordan.

What we've done so far ...

Over four sessions, we’ve had:

  • 500 conversation hours logged

  • 58 girls from Jordan, US, and Canada

  • 17 university partners

Limited exposure to learn and practice English language skills among refugee women in Jordan often presents barriers in obtaining sustainable employment, particularly for certain Palestine refugees who already experience specific, legal barriers to their economic participation. Unlike refugees with Jordanian citizenship, ex-Gazan refugees from Palestine lack national identification numbers and face considerable challenges in joining the workforce, in addition to accessing health insurance, state universities, and other government-sponsored services. The Jordanian job market requires that most applicants have, at least, minimum comprehension of the English language, and proficient computer and technology skills.

Hopes-Sitti Women's Centre, Jerash Refugee Camp.

There is a disparity in opportunities to gain skills and expertise between male and female Palestine refugees. While male workforce participation for Palestine refugees is 60%, it is only 10% for women. Through Banaat Connect (BC), refugee women can participate in a virtual language and cultural exchange with female college students studying Arabic in the United States and Canada. BC addresses the most common demands from Jordanian employers by allowing participants to both improve their English and develop computer skills critical to the workforce.

UNRWA Historical Information:

There are currently 5.3 million Palestinian refugees 1 registered with UNRWA (United NationsRelief and Works Agency) 2 in the Middle East. Only four countries host this enormous refugee population, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Palestinian Authority in Gaza and the West Bank. Currently, Palestinian refugees are the oldest and largest refugee group in the world.

Organizational Information:

Banaat Connect runs under the auspices of Hopes for Women in Education, an NGO focused on helping refugee, displaced, and non-status women to become self-sustaining and financially independent. We do this by helping young women continue secondary education through scholarships and social enterprise. We have launched the Hopes-Sitti Women's Centre in Jerash Refugee Camp in 2015 where we run multiple programs.

What is Jerash Refugee Camp?

The Gaza Palestinian Refugee Camp (Jerash Camp) was set up as an emergency camp in 1968 for Palestinians from Gaza fleeing the 6-Day War. It sits 5km from the famous Roman ruins in Jerash, Jordan and is home to over 30,000 Palestinian refugees. The average household income is below the national poverty line of 814 JD (around $1,150) per year. Refugees from this camp don't have Jordanian citizenship nor citizenship anywhere else which makes working and traveling legally incredibly difficult.

40% funded and ~180 supporters so far

Dear Friends of Banaat Connect,

Firstly, I have to say THANK YOU! Together, we have raised almost $3,700... and that's amazing.

On Thursday, our fundraiser will be at its halfway point, ending on July 1.  And we need your help to stay on track for a 100% funded project.

If you have a chance, could you tell a few friends or family members about us?  You can copy and paste this link: http://bit.ly/2rAVZqY or just tell them to Google "Launchgood Banaat Connect."

Thank you in advance!  So excited about what's to come.

Sincerely,

Lilly

We passed the $1000 Mark! (woohooo!)

Dear Supporters and Donors,

We have this Monday is blessed and filled with productivity and success fo you.

We're happy to have reached the $1000 Mark of our goal, the first part of the climb is always the hardest and we're confident with the support of our community we'll reach our goal. Today, I'm reaching out to ask you to send this campaign to ONE person that can donate. Nothing is more effective than word-of-mouth and referrals to help get us the support we need.

We've also had many people as us more about the Banaat Connect Project. If you haven't already been part of our language exchange cohort, you may have not had the chance to experience first hand and communicated, taught or learnt from this project directly. For a little over a year, Banaat Connect was born with first funding from USAID to help launch the program to create a bridge that would empower and give both Refugee Women Students in Jerash Refugee Camp and USA/Canadian College and University Women Students an opportunity to both learn English and/or learn Arabic in exchange of their connection. This unique experience enables both parties involved to give what they know best to each other to enhance their language skills further to help them in employment, educational and day-to-day communication in the other language.

I want to thank you again for your support and again wish to encourage everyone to share this campaign onwards to help spread the message to more people.

Looking forward to our 100% goal :)
