From Puerto Rico to Palestine/De Puerto Rico a Palestina

Meet Ana.  Being in love and shortly after marriage, she moved from the tropical paradise of Puerto Rico to a very conflicted war-torn Palestine in 1997. She didn’t realize that she was giving up her freedom of mobility in moving there—she has never able to receive a Palestinian ID, meaning that if she ever tries to cross a checkpoint, she will be separated from her 6 children who are Palestinian. Nevertheless, Ana continues to smile and has made her life in Palestine work. She accepted Islam, mastered Arabic, and learned Qur’an, embracing her new life in Palestine. However, just two years ago, she lost her husband--who was the sole provider of the family--to a sudden heart attack, leaving her a single mother in a nation she has made her home, but isn’t quite home. Losing a loved one is hard enough, but it’s even harder when there is severely limited income and mobility, and 6 children depending on you. Since his passing, Ana has not only had to be the sole provider for their 6 children ,but also concern herself with paying back her late husband’s debts.

Before her husband passed, Ana started a baking business called Rainbow Bites. Rainbow Bites specializes in a variety of cakes for diverse occasions, such as weddings, birthdays, and themed parties. This is a great niche market for Ana--only a few years earlier, themed cakes were unheard of in Palestine…and smiles were hard to come by as well. But Ana is always smiling…and determined to share that smile with her family, friends, and all of Palestine…through her food.

Conoce a Ana. Enamorada y poco después de casada se mudó en 1997 del paraíso tropical de Puerto Rico a una muy conflictiva y desgarrada Palestina. Al hacer esto, ella no se dio cuenta que iba a perder su libertad de movilidad – por no tener la identificación Palestina, que significa que si intenta cruzar un punto de seguridad, sería separada de sus 6 hijos quienes son Palestinos. No obstante, Ana continua sonriendo y ha hecho que su vida en Palestina funcione. Aceptó el Islam, ha dominado el idioma Árabe y aprendió Qur’an, adoptada completamente a su nueva vida en Palestina. Sin embargo, dos años pasado, perdió a su marido, quien era el único proveedor de la familia, de un repentino infarto al corazón, dejándola madre soltera en una nación que ella ha hecho su hogar, sin que sea propiamente su hogar. Perder aun ser querido es suficientemente difícil, pero es aún más difícil cuando los ingresos y la movilidad son limitados, y 6 hijos que dependen de ella. Desde que su marido falleció, Ana no sólo ha tenido que ser la única proveedora de sus 6 hijos, sino también ocuparse en pagar las deudas de su marido.

Antes de que su esposo falleciera, Ana comenzó una pastelería llamada “Pedacitos de Arcoiris”. La pastelería se especializa en una variedad de pasteles para diversas ocasiones, tales como bodas, cumpleaños, y fiestas temáticas. Este es un gran nicho de mercado para Ana, tan sólo unos años atrás no se conocían los pasteles temáticos en Palestina… e igualmente las sonrisas fueron difíciles en llegar. Pero Ana está siempre sonriente… y determinada en compartir esa sonrisa con su familia, amigos, y toda Palestina, a través de su comida.

Why it Matters/Porque  Importa

Baking, to Ana, feels like home. It is second nature to her—she has been doing it since she was 12 or 13 years old. She says, “If I don’t bake for some time, I feel like I’m lost, like something’s missing.” She has taken courses at Kitchen Club, which is the first culinary school in Palestine. But unfortunately, after her husband’s death, baking hasn’t been able to pay for everything this family of 7 needs, especially for her college-bound children.

Rainbow Bites is a family business in every sense of the word. Her daughters (aged 9 to 23) and even 4-year-old son bake with her. And since Ana doesn’t have a Palestinian ID, her daughters who do have permits represent Rainbow Bites in other cities and towns, doing the legwork for her. But this is a big burden for children to have to pay.

La pastelería para Ana es como estar en casa. Es su segunda naturaleza, lo ha hecho desde que tenía 12 o 13 años. Ella dice, “Si no hago pasteles por un tiempo, me siento perdida, como si algo hiciera falta.” Ella ha tomado cursos en el Club de Cocina, que es la primer escuela culinaria en Palestina. Desafortunadamente, después de la muerte de su esposo, la pastelería no ha pagado por todo lo que esta familia de 7 necesita, especialmente para sus hijos que van a la universidad.

“Pedacitos de Arcoiris” es un negocio familiar en cada sentido de la palabra. Sus hijas (de 9 a 23) e incluso su hijo de 3 años hornean junto a ella. Y dado que Ana no tiene una identificación Palestina, sus hijas quienes sí tienen permisos, representan a “Pedacitos de Arcoiris” en otras ciudades y pueblos, haciendo el trabajo de pierna por ella. Pero esta es una gran carga que los hijos tienen que pagar.

The Project/El Proyecto

Palestinian IDs and permits cost money. Bazaars and their tables cost money. Ingredients and tools for her business--which translates into food and comfort for her family--cost money. And all Ana hopes to do is give all of her children the ability to pursue their educations through college.

Ana doesn’t know many female entrepreneurs. She lives in a man’s world, where an unjust war and occupation threaten the existence of life, and often the casualties are single mothers and orphaned children. She is just doing what she knows best—working with her hands through baking—to keep food and smiles in the mouths of the children of Palestine, including her own. Help her support her family by donating generously. Ana will be using this money to pay for her elder two daughters’ college tuition and fees, and grow her business to help sustain the family. A child is considered an orphan once they lose their father. It is a great blessing to be able to provide for orphans and widows, and this is a great opportunity to reap those blessings by doing so. Las identificaciones Palestinas y permisos cuestan dinero. Los bazares y sus mesas cuestan dinero. Los ingredientes y los utensilios para su negocio, que se traduce en comida y confort para su familia, cuesta dinero. Y todo lo que Ana desea es que todos sus hijos tengan la capacidad de continuar su educación, atiendan y terminen la universidad.

Ana no conoce a muchas mujeres empresarias. Ella vive en un mundo de hombres, en donde una guerra injusta y la ocupación amenazan la existencia dela vida y frecuentemente las víctimas son las mujeres y los niños huérfanos. Ella sólo hace lo que mejor sabe hacer, trabajar con sus manos a través de la pastelería, para mantener la comida y las sonrisas en las bocas de los niños de Palestina, incluyendo a los suyos.

Ayúdala a mantener a su familia haciendo una donación generosa. Ana utilizará este dinero para pagar la universidad de sus dos hijas mayores y para crecer su negocio para mantener a su familia. Los niños son considerados huérfanos cuando pierden al padre. Es una gran bendición el tener la capacidad de proveer a los huérfanos y viudas, y esta es una gran oportunidad de cosechar esas bendiciones mandando nuestras donaciones a Ana.
