Help us replace the dome!

The landmark dome and minarets of East London Mosque have stood as the proud embodiment of the British Muslim community for over 35 years. They have become a widely recognised feature of the London skyline.

The dome and minaret caps of the Mosque were the final jigsaw piece that completed the building works in 1984. Each fibre-glass panel that makes up the hemispherical dome structure had to be installed separately and was carefully lowered into place by a crane. A local newspaper clipping from the Mosque’s archive highlights how the story was captured at the time and described it as the ‘lid’ being placed on the East London Mosque.

ELM’s Dome Appeal

After over three decades, the natural lifespan of the dome and minaret caps' fibre-glass structures has ended.

The entire project to replace the dome and minaret caps will cost around £500k. We have raised £220k last Ramadan and in need of £280k to complete this project. The plan is to carry out the refurbishment works without causing a disruption to daily prayers or closing off the Mosque’s main prayer hall.

The Mosque has sought the help of expert architects to help with a refreshed design for the dome, which will closely match the existing structure.

We want you to take part in helping renovate the Mosque’s dome and minaret caps to their former glory. Indeed, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to contribute to one of the most iconic landmarks that have become synonymous with the British Muslim community.
